“Hold on!” The man suddenly strode over and blocked Sylvia’s path, sizing her up from head to toe with a look that made her skin crawl. “You’re Lydia’s boss?”
Sylvia nodded. “Yes, I am.”
He sneered, “So Lydia got taken advantage of because of work, right? She’s still stuck in a hospital bed. Tell me—how do you plan to make this right?”
“Harry, this has nothing to do with our boss!” Amy shot back, her voice shaking with anger.
“Nothing to do with her? You work for this company. If you get hurt on the job, your boss is responsible!” Harry was full of righteous fury. “Today’s incident—at least twenty grand in compensation, or I’ll go online and expose your PR firm for forcing employees to entertain clients!”
“You’re out of your mind if you think you’re getting that kind of money!” Milanda stepped in front of Sylvia, her face pale with rage. “I’ve been biting my tongue this whole time, but as Lydia’s boyfriend, you saw your girlfriend get hurt and didn’t offer a word of comfort. All you did was interrogate her and act disgusted. Who do you think she did all this for?”
“That’s between me and Lydia. It’s none of your business!” Harry glared at Milanda, looking ready to explode.
“Fine, I’ll stay out of your relationship,” Milanda shot back. “But why did Lydia even go see Mr. Matz from TENDAM? It wasn’t for work. She wanted to earn extra money to pay off your debts. If anyone owes her, it’s you—not our boss.”
Harry turned on her coldly. “Who are you to speak for your boss? Trying to brown-nose, are you? If you’re so eager, why don’t you just pay Lydia yourself?”
“Are you deaf?” Milanda’s voice was sharp and quick. “Let me say it again: your girlfriend got hurt because of you—not this company. Trying to squeeze money out of our boss? Pathetic.”
Harry’s face twisted in fury. He suddenly raised his hand, aiming to slap Milanda.
Sylvia’s expression darkened. She yanked Milanda behind her and caught Harry’s wrist with her free hand, her voice icy. “Running out of arguments, so now you want to get physical? You think being a man gives you the right to bully people?”
Harry’s face was twisted with anger. “Let go, or I’ll hit you too!”
Just then, the door flew open and someone burst in. With one swift kick, Eugene sent Harry stumbling to the floor. Harry scrambled up and lunged at him.
Sylvia, knowing Eugene’s leg was still injured, rushed forward and kicked Harry herself. Her kick was even fiercer; Harry slammed into the wall and the chair crashed to the ground. He clutched his leg, unable to stand.
Eugene immediately turned to Sylvia. “What’s his deal? Let me handle him next time—you shouldn’t have to step in.”
Sylvia replied calmly, “No one needs to fight. If he causes any more trouble, I’ll just call the police.”
At the mention of the police, Harry’s bravado vanished. He hugged his leg and fell silent, teeth clenched in pain.
Milanda snorted in disgust. “Coward—only tough when he thinks no one will fight back.”
