Magdalen looped her arm through Sylvia’s and teased Carson, “Mr. Foster, Marina’s right here, you know. Could you try reining in that habit of yours? Every time you see a pretty woman, you just can’t help yourself.”
Marina Evert chimed in from the side, “Oh, don’t! If he ever stopped flirting, he wouldn’t be the legendary Mr. Foster anymore!”
Carson, with his boyish good looks, put on an innocent expression. “What are you two talking about? I’m just having a perfectly normal work conversation. How come everything sounds so different coming out of your mouths?”
Marina looked just as serious. “That’s what happens when everyone knows you so well!”
Carson’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Seems like you don’t know me quite well enough. Don’t worry, I’ll give you the chance to fix that.”
Color crept up Marina’s ears, and she decided he wasn’t worth responding to.
Everyone burst out laughing and joked around for a while. Then Jonathan glanced over at Gabriel, who sat quietly on the nearby couch. “Aren’t you going to say hello?”
Gabriel answered coolly, “No need.”
Jonathan’s lips twitched in amusement. “Everyone else is making the rounds. You’re the only one who isn’t—it’s almost suspicious.”
Gabriel shrugged, utterly unconcerned. “There’s never been anything normal between me and her.”
Jonathan just raised an eyebrow, choosing not to argue.

People settled in, chatting and laughing. Those who could drink enjoyed wine or cocktails, while the rest sipped juice.
Josiah James was up front with Kya in his arms, singing children’s songs. First came “Five Little Ducks,” then “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Kya sang along, her sweet, piping voice mixing with Josiah’s gentle baritone, making everyone in the room smile.
Charlie James called out, “Josiah, could you keep it down? You’re off-key, and you’re throwing off Kya!”
Josiah turned, microphone in hand. “Have a heart, would you? Who’s throwing off who here?”
Kya, not wanting them to squabble, placed her little hands on Josiah’s cheeks and said, “Uncle, don’t yell at my dad! He might get mad and hit you!”
Josiah was so amused he could barely get a word out. “Sweetheart, who’s better—your dad or your uncle?”
