Serena Jennings couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread.
She had no idea who was following and monitoring her, or for what purpose.
But she couldn’t let them see she was nervous, that she was flustered.
Walking among the crowd, Serena’s steps were steady, her face adorned with a smile, as if she were just out shopping.
Then, she walked into a nearby shopping mall.
Riding the escalator to the third floor, Serena browsed through one women’s clothing store after another.
Finally, she spotted a store that was having an off-season sale, crowded with customers.
In the changing room, Serena dressed in a black professional outfit, her hair pinned up.
Exiting the changing room, Serena wore a cream-colored dress, a large sun hat, sunglasses, and her hair down, her makeup completely different from before.
She blended in with the customers and found a solitary girl, walking beside her, pretending to be her friend, and the two walked out of the store together shoulder to shoulder.
As expected, those watching and following her didn’t recognize her.
Serena noticed a few men had exposed their positions and overheard them exclaim in panic:
"Where is she? Where did she run off to? How are we supposed to explain losing her to President Lockwood?"
Serena’s eyes widened slightly behind her oversized sunglasses.
The President Lockwood she knew, there was only one.
Frowning, she took out her phone, but hesitated for a moment and didn’t make a call to Caleb Lockwood.
Nighttime, Country B, Aeridor.
President Sterling was hosting a soirée here.
On the rooftop of Aeridor, there was a massive swimming pool where many guests had changed into swimwear and were frolicking in the water.
Serena hadn’t changed into swimwear.
She wore a light blue sheer evening gown, her hair softly curled, her every move graceful and romantic, fitting with the pool party even without swimwear.
The evening’s itinerary had been set three months ago.
It was also why Serena hadn’t called Caleb Lockwood during the day.
She expected to see Caleb Lockwood at this soirée.
Even though Caleb Lockwood had lost Lockwood Group, he was still the future heir of The Lockwood Family.
Sitting at the poolside, Serena was sipping a glass of champagne, bored.
Next to her stood two men in suits.
The men were tall and well-built, as if forming a natural barrier around Serena.
When her glass of champagne was nearly empty, sure enough, Serena saw Caleb Lockwood.
Caleb hadn’t changed into swimwear either, still donning his customary sleek black suit.
Upon seeing Serena, he immediately strode over.
But he was stopped two steps away from Serena by the men beside her.
Caleb’s handsome face showed a hint of displeasure.
"You hired bodyguards?"
He asked.
Serena motioned for the two bodyguards to step back, shrugging with a smile.
"What can I do, when someone is so blatantly planting their spies around me! Caleb Lockwood..."
Serena suddenly stood up, her bright eyes staring directly into Caleb’s.
"Why have you been sending people to watch and follow me, what are you up to?"
Caleb gazed intently at the face so close in front of him.
This face was truly beautiful.
Beautiful beyond words, extraordinarily stunning.
This face overlapped with the memory of one with grandma-gray curly hair, wearing braces, and yet clear-skinned with freckles.
Whether the features were identical or similar, he couldn’t tell.
But his heart had already reached a conclusion.
"The last time I asked you a question, you haven’t answered me yet."
Of course, Serena knew what question Caleb was referring to.
She didn’t understand why Caleb suddenly remembered Chloe from the detention center.
But what difference did remembering make?
"Now it’s my turn to ask you... why send people to stalk and monitor me?"
Serena raised her head again, and almost instantaneously Caleb Lockwood saw an extra red dot appear on Serena’s forehead that wasn’t there before.
"Watch out!"
He lunged forward, pushing Serena into the swimming pool.
Splash!
The sound of water splashing drew the attention of many guests, who gathered around the pool.
On the rooftop of the building opposite, joker put away the sniper rifle.
"Tch!"
He clicked his tongue.
If the plan had gone smoothly, tonight Serena would have been shot dead right before Caleb Lockwood’s eyes.
Mental imagery of Serena’s brains splattering across Caleb’s face was thrilling for joker.
In the rooftop pool of Aeridor, Serena was pulled up by Caleb Lockwood.
As she surfaced, Serena was tightly embraced by Caleb, as if he was her human shield.
Serena felt her body trembling.
Not knowing if it was from shock or cold.
She couldn’t see the little red dot aimed at her from the sniper rifle.
But given Caleb Lockwood’s intense reaction, she could guess.
However, she still didn’t understand why an elite assassin wanted her dead.
What big shot was she?
After Caleb helped Serena surface, the Lockwood Family’s bodyguards appeared as well.
"President Lockwood, no one’s on the rooftop opposite, they must’ve fled."
One of the family’s bodyguards reported to Caleb Lockwood.
Caleb breathed a slight sigh of relief, but did not release Serena.
Their two wet bodies clung together, even in front of everyone, Serena’s face flushed and she couldn’t help but struggle against Caleb’s embrace.
"It’s alright now, you can let me go."
Caleb did not comply.
