Serena looked up, reflected in her eyes was Caleb Lockwood’s serious expression.
"Is this what you meant by being able to protect yourself?"
The sudden question left Serena speechless.
If the person who had aimed at her earlier was really joker, without Caleb, she might have already been dead.
A shiver ran through Serena’s body, filled with a bit of lingering fear.
The next second, her body was embraced even tighter by Caleb. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Serena’s choice of dress today was very thin, and after getting wet, the fabric became even more transparent.
Being so closely held against Caleb’s body felt like being wrapped entirely by his warmth and breath.
This feeling made Serena both ashamed and anxious.
"If you keep holding me like this, we’ll definitely be trending by tomorrow."
Serena gently reminded.
Caleb chuckled.
"Let them trend us, then the internet will be flooded with calls for us to remarry."
"Remarry?"
Serena let out a cold laugh.
"You’re dreaming too beautifully... Do you think just because you protected me, I’m going to be with you?"
Her words were cold and sarcastic, but inside, Serena was somewhat moved.
After all, if the assassin had pulled the trigger in that instant earlier, the bullet would have undoubtedly hit Caleb, who lunged towards her.
At that moment, Caleb’s reaction was swift.
Any hesitance in his body, and the gunshot would have sounded, and the assassin might have succeeded.
And she would have lost her life there.
So Caleb was so selfless... because he remembered she was Chloe from the juvenile facility?
Caleb looked down at Serena’s troubled face.
He wanted to tell her that he protected her because he wanted to protect her, not to get something in return.
But in the end, Caleb said nothing.
Because he knew Serena wouldn’t believe him.
When did he become a liar in Serena’s eyes, full of deceit?
Caleb lightly closed his eyes and let go of Serena.
He wasn’t afraid of the onlookers or trending on social media.
It was just that standing in the water would be cold, especially since Serena was dressed so thinly.
Though Caleb’s suit was also wet, at least it wasn’t see-through, so he wrapped Serena’s body in his suit.
"Thank you, Caleb..."
Before reaching the shore, Caleb heard Serena’s thanks.
It was just a polite expression of gratitude, yet it was like a candy that sweetened Caleb’s heart.
He couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
He never realized he was so useless.
President Sterling personally escorted Caleb and Serena to the guest rooms to change clothes, the rooms facing each other; after changing, they both happened to step out at the same time.
The corridor was lined with plainclothes bodyguards from the Lockwood Family, as well as Serena’s hired bodyguards.
"Serena, tonight’s events should have made you realize I’m not being alarmist!"
Caleb spoke first, and Serena was silent.
"Accept my protection until I catch that joker... The Lockwood Family’s bodyguards are much more reliable than the ones you hired."
The two bodyguards Serena hired, though present, didn’t dare to argue with Caleb.
At the poolside earlier, Caleb’s reaction was indeed faster than both of theirs.
And fortunately, the opposite side hadn’t really fired, or the dead person might have been Caleb.
If Caleb had died, they would likely be implicated, not knowing how they disappeared from this world.
The two bodyguards exchanged a look, understanding each other, both stepping forward to resign from Serena, even refusing pay.
In the blink of an eye, Serena was without her bodyguards.
She couldn’t help but glare at Caleb.
Caleb was bewildered by the glare.
"I didn’t threaten them... It’s just that they know how to adapt to the situation."
"Then I’m the one who doesn’t know how to adapt."
Serena walked off on her own.
"Serena, I don’t want anything... I just want to protect you..."
Caleb caught up with Serena’s quick stride and grabbed her arm.
"I swore I would protect you forever..."
Serena stopped abruptly.
In her office, she picked up her phone to call Dylan Shepherd.
"Master, master, have you decided to attend my piano competition?"
The excited voice of Dylan came through the receiver immediately.
"Yes, I decided to attend..."
"Yay!"
"But I need a favor from you."
"What favor? Just say it, Master."
"Well..."
As night approached, the city lights began to brighten.
Serena didn’t even know when she had fallen asleep at her desk.
She woke up because of a gunshot—
Startled awake.
But in reality, no one had fired at her.
Serena had a dream where she and Julian Xavier stood face to face, and suddenly, he pulled out a gun.
The dark muzzle aimed at her, as if it instantly drained her life away.
Serena did a deep breath, touching her chest.
Her racing heartbeat hadn’t calmed down.
The security personnel she had arranged were in place.
She knew this.
Even though there was no need to be so worried, she couldn’t help but be afraid.
Especially when she was alone in her office.
Loneliness, combined with fear, crept up from her feet.
The overly quiet office magnified this loneliness many times over.
It was clearly she who asked to be alone, but now she wished someone was there with her.
Serena felt she was so useless like this.
The act of picking up the phone was completely subconscious, and when Serena came to her senses, the phone screen was frozen on the call interface, the name under her thumb—
Was Caleb Lockwood.
