The year I hated my father the most, he did something unexpected to please me:

He personally sent his longtime friend—someone decades younger–into my bed.

After that night, I fell for him.

Three months later, I forgave my father.

Four months later, I was pregnant.

From then on, I became the most treasured pregnant woman in all of Silvergate.

At every prenatal checkup, the richest and second–richest men in Silvergate would be there by my

side.

Everyone said I was pampered like a princess by both my husband and my father.

But on the day of the anomaly scan, both of them called in sick.

“It’s an important project,” my father said, gently patting my head.

Lucas caressed my baby bump. “Once it’s done, I’ll bring you and the baby a gift.”

I smiled as they left. Minutes later, a video arrived.

In the video, my father was dressed as a groom, standing beside Grace–the mistress who had driven my mother to her death years ago.

Their illegitimate daughter, pregnant and in a wedding gown, held onto my husband’s arm.

“A double celebration!” someone toasted in the video. “Congrats to Mr. Whitmore for reuniting with his true love, and to Mr. Reed for marrying his destined one!”

At the end of the clip, my father’s voice floated in:

“Since you and Claire’s marriage was a sham, doesn’t that make the baby a bastard?”

Lucas chuckled softly:

“Claire has everything, but Clarissa lived as a bastard all her life. I couldn’t let her child suffer the

same fate.”

I bit my lip and left the hospital in silence, my phone buzzing with new messages.

A vasectomy consent form appeared on my screen, with a single line of text:

Wandering aimlessly outside the hospital, I found myself on a busy street.

On a giant screen outside a mall, they were playing a family interview from three months ago- back when I had just gotten pregnant.

My father held up an auctioned diamond to the camera and explained:

“This ‘Heart of the Ocean‘ is a gift for my future granddaughter. The price doesn’t matter–it’s the legacy that counts.”

Lucas gently held my hand.

“Cece is the one who’s been through the most. I’ll spend my life taking care of her and our daughter.”

The screen froze on a moment of us smiling at each other.

A headline scrolled across the bottom: Silvergate’s Happiest Family.

Rain and tears blurred my vision.

My phone rang. It was Lucas.

I used to answer the moment I heard his custom ringtone.

But now, I hesitated for a long time.

I finally picked up right before it went to voicemail.

Laughter came from the other end—it was Lucas’s brother:

“Lucas finally got what he wanted! Back when Clarissa went abroad, he turned all of Silvergate upside down looking for her. Now, to help her reclaim the Whitmore Corporation, he even acted

married to Claire for two years!”

“Ha! Lucas really is charming! Last time he kissed Claire, her legs went weak–she was clinging onto him like a koala. No wonder she got knocked up without even a marriage certificate.”

“She used to look down on bastards the most. Who would’ve thought her own child would be

one?”

“What a show today, huh? Clarissa said, ‘If Mom’s not getting married, neither am I.‘ And Lucas actually convinced Edward to marry Grace. Mother and daughter both married into wealth!

Silvergate hasn’t seen drama like this in years!”
