**Dreams Folding Into Broken Time**
**Chapter 206**
**Chapter 123: See Yourself Out**
The clock in the kitchen ticked with a relentless insistence, its sound echoing through the expansive space as if it were mocking the very air we breathed.
With each passing second, the atmosphere thickened around me, a suffocating weight pressing against my chest, making it feel as though I was struggling to draw in breath. Penny stood near the island, her hands quivering slightly, as if she were grasping at the frayed edges of a reality that was slipping through her fingers.
“What did you say?” Her voice was barely a whisper, strained and small, as though she couldn’t quite believe the words that had just pierced the silence.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling the onset of a migraine creeping behind my eyes, a warning sign of the chaos that was about to unfold. “Penny, I think it’s best if you leave now,” I said softly, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. “This isn’t going to lead to anything good.”
Yet, she remained rooted to the spot, her eyes—once so sharp and vibrant—now wide and glistening with unshed tears. “I’m not going anywhere, Roman!” Her voice cracked, rising in pitch, a sound I had never heard from her before. “What the hell did you just say about my sister?”
I gripped the edge of the counter tightly, my knuckles turning white with the pressure. Why had I thought inviting her over would lead to anything but disaster? I had hoped for a moment of peace, some laughter to lighten the mood, but instead, the atmosphere was charged with tension. Extending an olive branch had been a grave misstep.
“Penny,” I tried again, lowering my voice in a desperate attempt to calm the storm brewing between us. “Please. Just stop.”
“No,” she shot back, her tone sharp and unyielding. “You can’t just throw something like that at me and expect me to walk away unscathed. I need you to say it again.”
I stared down at the granite countertop, wishing for a way to rewind time, to find the right words that could undo this catastrophic moment. But there was no easy escape, no gentle truth that could soften the blow.
I shut my eyes, gathering the strength to speak. “Your sister,” I finally uttered, my voice barely a whisper, “was sleeping with my brother, Penny.”
The silence that enveloped us was so profound it felt as though it could consume the entire house.
Penny gasped, a sound that sliced through the stillness, “No… no, she wouldn’t.” She shook her head violently, disbelief coursing through her. “She’d never do something like that. Dahlia loved you, Roman. She would never cheat on you. I knew my sister.”
A hollow, humorless laugh escaped my lips. “Well, she did,” I replied, bitterness creeping into my tone. “And the sooner you come to terms with that, the better it will be for both of us.”
I began to move toward the living room, desperate for some distance, for a breath of fresh air, but her voice halted me in my tracks.
“Which one?” she whispered, her voice trembling, the fear of the answer evident in her eyes.
I paused, feeling the tension tighten in my shoulders.
“Which of your brothers was she sleeping with?”
I refused to turn around. “You really want to know? You want me to say it out loud?”
“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know,” she replied, her voice shaky and filled with dread.
The truth clawed its way up my throat, raw and painful. When I finally spoke, the words felt like they were tearing me apart. “Your then-fling.”
A sharp intake of breath followed, and then silence fell again, the only sound between us was the relentless ticking of the clock.
When I finally turned to face her, she looked at me as if I had just declared the sky was falling. “No,” she breathed, her hand flying to cover her mouth in shock.
“That’s not true. You’re lying.”
“Believe whatever you want,” I muttered, brushing past her with a sense of urgency. “See yourself out when you’re ready.”
But before I could reach the hallway, she grasped my sleeve, her fingers trembling with desperation. “Roman, wait.”
I sighed heavily, turning back to face her. “What is it now?”
