Chapter 271 Old Wounds, New Doubts
He sent her away?
Although Zaden’s expression looked serious, Athena didn’t feel any relief.
To her, he still had a lot of responsibility for everything that had happened.

Zaden lowered his voice. “Maya came to my office today. She brought a wish jar and asked me to keep the promise I made years ago.” Athena’s heart sank. “And what did you tell her?”
“I told her I’m married now and asked her not to come again.”
Athena crossed her arms. “What kind of promise was in that wish jar?”
She thought of the post Maya had made on Instagram–a cryptic caption asking if an old wish could still come true. It had stirred up plenty of curious comments.
People wanted to know what that wish was.
Truth was, Athena was curious too.
Zaden pressed his lips together, lost in thought.
Back then, he and Maya had been young–too young. They did all sorts of silly, romantic things couples do, like burying a wish jar.
It was on Maya’s birthday. They’d driven out to a quiet, hidden spot, made their wishes, and sealed them in a glass jar. Then they buried it under the roots of an old tree.
They promised that one day, years later, they’d come back together, dig it up, and laugh about the past.
But life didn’t turn out that way. Too many things happened afterward, things that tore them apart. Zaden eventually forgot all about the jar. Maya didn’t. She’d gone back, dug it up, and brought it to him.
Maya even asked him to make their old wishes come true.
Zaden almost laughed at the absurdity of it. Some things were meant to stay buried, and he had no intention of keeping that promise.
When he saw the heavy look on Athena’s face, Zaden spoke again. “What happened between Maya and me was long over. There’s nothing left to miss. The person who matters most to me is standing right here.”

Athena stayed silent.
Men’s promises always sound beautiful, but saying and doing are two very different things.
Zaden claimed he didn’t plan to get back with Maya. Yet Maya clearly hadn’t given up. Even if Athena ignored it today, Maya would keep showing up in their lives.
And when that happened, would things fall apart all over again?
Athena didn’t want to be caught up with this mess again. What happened with Lewis had already dragged her name through the mud. She wasn’t about to let that happen a second time.
She wanted peace, even if that meant walking away.
After a long pause, she finally looked at Zaden and asked, “Are you sure you don’t plan to get back with her? Not even a little tempted by how she came to you? Don’t you think what happened between you two back then was a regret? That not marrying her left things unfinished?”
Zaden let out a quiet sigh. So that was what she thought of him.
It seemed Athena had deeply misunderstood him.
“Athena,” he said, his tone soft but steady, “what made you think I want to get back with her? Ever since I met you, I’ve already let her go.”
Athena thought about this and said in a low voice, “She’s been pretty loud about her return. And the way you’ve acted–it feels like you haven’t fully moved on.”
She didn’t say it out loud, but she’d seen the posts Maya had made online. If she still pretended nothing was going on after that, she’d only be lying to herself.
“No, that’s not true!” Zaden cut in quickly. “I’ve already gotten rid of everything related to Maya. I just wanted a fresh start with you.”
Zaden was helpless, a hint of pain in his eyes. “You thought I wanted to get back with her, but you never asked me about it. You don’t really trust me, do you?”
I don’t trust him.
He wasn’t wrong. Their relationship was a mess. It was time to sort things out clearly.
Athena steadied herself and took a deep breath. She looked at Zaden and said calmly, “If you’ve really done nothing wrong, then deal with your problems first. Once things with Maya are settled, we’ll talk.”
Zaden could see how firm she was. He knew this was the best solution, even if it hurt.
