Maya wanted Kit on her side. If Kit helped her, Athena would have no one to turn to.
After persuading her mother, Maya went to Kit’s room.
Kit was reading some papers. He heard a knock and called, “Come in.”
Maya pushed the door open and sat beside him.
“Kit, are you busy? I need to tell you something important.”
“Oh, go ahead.” Kit set his papers down. He suspected Maya’s visit had something to do with Zaden or Athena.
Maya never bothered him about anything else.
Her eyes shifted. She spoke softly, “I want you to do me a favor. Will you help me?”
“What favor?” Kit felt a bad feeling in his chest.
Maya smiled gently. “I want you to win Athena’s heart for me.”
“Cough! Cough! Cough!” Kit choked on this.
He stared at Maya with wide eyes, as if she had said something impossible. When he didn’t answer, Maya’s smile faded. “Why are you making that face? Is this so hard for you?” she asked.
“When I was abroad, you liked Athena, and you helped me. I don’t blame you. But I’m back now. I’m your sister. Don’t you owe your sister a favor?”
Kit opened his mouth and closed it again.
He knew Maya didn’t understand the full truth of Athena’s relationship with their family. That was why she could ask this.
But asking him to chase Athena? He would rather die than do something so wrong.
He didn’t want to do something abominable and didn’t want to hurt anyone.
“Will you promise me?” Maya asked, staring straight at him.
Kit hesitated. “Maya. I’m afraid I can’t promise you that.”
She had expected that answer. Letting out a short laugh, Maya stood up and crossed her arms. “Fine. If you won’t help me, I’ll find someone else. Maybe I’ll ask Preston.”

Then panic flashed across his face as he reached out to stop her. “Maya, wait! Don’t talk to Preston about this. Let’s–let’s discuss it first, alright?”
Maya’s lips curved into a small, knowing smile. She knew exactly how to push his buttons.
“So now you’ll agree?” she asked, sitting back down.
Kit frowned deeply, torn. He knew if he refused, Maya would really go to someone else.
And Preston had no idea who Athena truly was. If he got involved, it could turn into an even bigger mess.

Even if it wasn’t Preston, Maya would just find another guy. That constant interference would only trouble Athena more.
So, maybe it would have been better if he had taken the hit.
With that thought in mind, Kit let out a quiet sigh, his face set with grim determination. “Alright,” he said finally. “I’ll do it.”
“Perfect!” Maya clapped her hands lightly, satisfied. “Just make sure you take Athena away from Zaden. But don’t get serious with her–you know what kind of background she has. She’s not someone who could ever marry into our family.”
Kit nodded over and over, though it wasn’t clear if he truly heard her words.
As soon as she finished, he stood up and said quickly, “Got it. I’ll handle it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do.”
Maya frowned at his careless tone.
Still, since he’d agreed, she decided to let it slide. Her mood was far too good to argue.
When Maya finally left, Kit dropped back into his chair, dragging a hand down his face.
Shit! Everything is out of control!
The next day at the hospital dorms, Athena woke up feeling surprisingly rested.
After moving out of Zaden’s place, she had expected a sleepless night, but aside from a few uneasy dreams, she slept fine.
