But Athena handled it with ease, never complaining.

Jaylee watched her for a while and finally said, “Dr. Hall, I can’t believe they gave you this kind of work on your first week. And you didn’t even say a word about it! With Professor Warner backing you, you could’ve easily refused.”

Athena smiled. “The supervisor’s one of Barbara’s people, isn’t she? Otherwise, this kind of job wouldn’t have landed on my desk. It’s fine–it’s not difficult, just tedious. No need to trouble Professor Warner with something like this.”

She felt guilty toward Kate and didn’t want to cause her any trouble. To Athena, this kind of task was nothing worth fussing over.

Jaylee grinned and gave her a thumbs–up.

While they were still sorting through the papers, someone came by and said, “Hey, you two, come out for a minute. Professor Rice has arrived. We’re all going to greet her.”

Maya.

Athena’s eyes darkened. She quietly put down the file in her hand.

Jaylee stole a glance at her face and whispered, “Dr. Hall, you don’t look upset at all. So … you and Mr. Storm really don’t have anything going on, huh?”

Athena couldn’t help but laugh.

It looked like Jaylee had taken her earlier advice to heart; she really had been watching and judging for herself.

“Alright, let’s go.” Athena put away what she was holding and walked toward the door. Jaylee hurried after her, still wondering what was really going on.

By the time they arrived, the lobby was already filled with people.

Almost everyone who could leave their post was there. Even the on–duty doctors had taken a moment to join the crowd. It was clear that Maya’s arrival was a big deal. Everyone wanted to welcome her to the hospital.

Maya was chatting with Barbara when she spotted Athena in the distance. A faint, shadowy look crossed her eyes.

She had heard Athena was working at Storm Hospital, but seeing her here confirmed it.

Still, they were in completely different departments. Maya was a surgeon in modern medicine, while Athena specialized in holistic care. Their paths shouldn’t have crossed.

“Professor Gordon,” Maya said lightly, “I just saw someone I know.”

Barbara’s eyes widened in surprise. She hadn’t expected Maya to know anyone here. But when she saw Maya heading straight toward Athena, her surprise deepened.

Wait–was Athena the person Maya was talking about?

“Athena, we meet again,” Maya said smoothly, as if nothing had ever happened between them.

Athena kept her expression calm. “Yes,” she replied evenly. “We meet again.”

Barbara walked closer, stunned by what she was seeing.

Athena was Kate’s student!

And Kate was Barbara’s sworn rival, the one woman she couldn’t stand. Could Maya actually be connected to Kate too? That would be a nightmare.

Barbara didn’t have to guess for long. The answer revealed itself soon enough.

Maya turned to Barbara with a curious smile. “By the way, I remember Athena used to be a surgeon, right? Why did she end up wasting her time in holistic medicine now?”

Barbara gave a sharp little laugh, the corner of her lips curling with mock sympathy.

She explained kindly for Athena. “Oh, that’s because she hurt her hand. I heard Kate was heartbroken over it. Such a pity, really. Athena used to have so much potential.”

Maya’s lips curved in amusement. She glanced over at Athena, clearly enjoying the jab.

Athena met her eyes calmly and said, “Sorry to disappoint you, but I never quit surgery. I’ve been handling my hospital paperwork these past few days, trying to decide which department to join. Now I’ve made up my mind.”

She paused, then declared, “I’m joining surgery.”

“What?!” Barbara stared at her, then burst into laughter. “Athena, don’t be ridiculous. Don’t ruin other people’s lives.”
