Athena must have felt threatened by Maya’s presence. That’s why she tried so hard to compete with her, to prove herself better.
But unfortunately for her, Athena was bound to be disappointed.
Maya pretended to sound kind and said, “Professor Gordon, don’t be so harsh. Maybe Athena’s hand has already healed. If that’s the case, she might still be able to return to the surgical department.”
She shifted her eyes and added, “How about this? If Athena can prove herself by successfully completing one surgery, then we’ll allow her back. What do you think?”
Barbara frowned. She definitely didn’t want Kate’s student to get any attention.
The holistic medicine department in their hospital was small and lacked respect. Athena had no real future there. But if she returned to surgery, that would be a whole different story.
Still, Barbara thought it through. There was no way Athena had truly recovered.
She couldn’t possibly succeed in this challenge.
When that happened, it would be Kate’s reputation that took the hit. All Barbara had to do was sit back and watch the show.
Barbara finally said, “Alright then, let’s settle it that way.”
After the former supervisor who once made things difficult for Athena left, the hospital’s leadership changed. Barbara and Kate now took turns serving as the hospital’s directors, giving them enormous power. Once they both agreed on something, it was as good as done.
That was why Maya had asked for her approval.
Athena nodded. “Alright. Let’s wait and see.”
Then she turned to Jaylee and said, “Let’s go back to make some preparation.”
Athena led Jaylee out. Kate quickly followed, wanting to discuss the matter with her.
Maya watched Athena’s back as she walked away. She turned to Barbara and asked, “Professor Gordon, are you sure Athena’s hand is really damaged?”
“Of course,” Barbara replied. “I saw it happen myself. Her hand tendons were torn. Even if they

were reattached, they’d never be as flexible as before. That’s why she left surgery.”
Maya tilted her head in curiosity. “When did she quit?”
“Hmm, around ten years ago,” Barbara said, recalling roughly.
Maya frowned. Suddenly, a name came to mind–Serena.
Back then, there had been a brilliant surgeon named Serena who also left after an injury. Maya had been a medical student at the time. Serena’s reputation was so great that even she had heard of her.
Later, Serena disappeared completely. No one knew where she went.
And the timing of Serena’s disappearance–it was exactly ten years ago.
At the same time Athena was injured.
Maya suddenly laughed to herself. How could she ever think Athena had anything to do with Serena? Those two couldn’t be more different.
From what Barbara said, it seemed impossible for Athena to return to the surgery department anyway.
She probably did this out of spite.
If word got out about this, no one would ever trust Athena again. Everyone would turn against her. Without patients or colleagues to support her, how could she ever perform surgery again?
A faint smirk curved at Maya’s lips.
She pulled out her phone and sent a message to her assistant. “Athena hurt her hand, but she’s trying to return to surgery. Spread the word—make sure everyone knows.”
“Got it.”
Satisfied, Maya put her phone away and smiled.
“Professor Gordon, thank you so much for going out of your way to show me around the hospital.”
“Ms. Rice, you’re too polite. It’s my pleasure.”
Barbara had been eager to win Maya over, hoping to boost her reputation by getting Maya on her side. She had reached out before Maya even arrived. The two quickly hit it off.
