The only people around me are my friends.
The only guy in my life right now is Remy. Wait—no way. Is this girl actually in love with Remy?
That guy? Seriously? What on earth does she see in him? She must be out of her mind.
Besides, I already kicked that loser out of my life. There’s no way I’m letting him anywhere near my best friend.
The silence stretched on until Liam saw right through me and laughed softly. “It’s not Remy. Don’t stress about it.”
I let out a long breath. “Thank God. I was seriously about to have a heart attack.”
After hanging up, I set three alarms on my phone, two hours apart, just in case, and finally managed to fall asleep.
But maybe my mind was too full, because I woke up before any of them went off.
The moment I opened my eyes, something felt off.
My waist—usually empty—was suddenly pinned by an arm. Warm breath tickled the back of my neck, sending shivers down my spine. Cold sweat broke out along my hairline.
I shoved the arm away and shot upright. Next to me was a twisted-up person-shaped lump, hair falling over their face like some kind of ghost.
I screamed and kicked—“Who are you? Get out of here right now or I’m calling the police!”
Before my third kick landed, the ghost sat up, clutching her stomach and groaning, “Avery, are you trying to make sure I never have kids? What is wrong with you?”
I smacked the bedside lamp on, blinking in the sudden light. It was Kailynn, who was supposed to be sleeping in the guest room.
When did this crazy girl sneak into my bed?
“You’re the crazy one! You almost gave me a heart attack. Do you have any idea what you look like, creeping in here all wild-haired in the middle of the night? I thought I was in a horror movie.”
“Says the girl who’s just like me. If you weren’t, you’d have made a move already. Let me guess—the person you like already has someone, and you’d never want to hurt them. So you just keep your feelings to yourself.”
In the dark, I heard her sniffle softly.
After that restless night, I woke up to bright daylight. The blanket beside me was folded neat and tight, and Kailynn was already gone.
On the kitchen table, I found a bowl of hot soup and a fried egg. Next to them was a note, the handwriting bold and messy: Had to run, work stuff. Don’t forget breakfast.
My phone buzzed—two new messages waiting for me on my chat app.
One was from Remy.
He’d sent a photo from the beach—three seagulls flying together, necks stretched high into the sky. Landed, Avery. Miss you. Wait for me. I’ve got something important to handle, so I’ll be offline for a while. If you need anything, just message me—I’ll reply when I can. And no matter what comes up, you can always go to Mike. I’m leaving him for you.
