From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 165

Something happened during that time—something I have no clue about. What could it possibly be?

I got lost in my own head, thoughts spinning in circles. I needed to know the truth. I needed to understand what really went down.

If something did happen, then maybe everything Remy said before—about loving me, about doing it all to protect me—maybe there was actually a reason behind it.

Cindy squeezed my hand, snapping me out of my thoughts and dragging me back to reality.

Suddenly, Kailynn’s words echoed in my mind.

Cheating is cheating. The truth is right there. No amount of excuses or justifications can change what happened.

No matter how convincing or pitiful those excuses sound, when you’re faced with real betrayal, they’re nothing but a sad joke.

“Who’s the family member here? The patient’s in critical condition. We need someone to stay with her.” The female doctor’s voice was all business, but I could see the contempt in her eyes.

I hesitated, wondering if I should just admit to being family for now, since I was the one who called the ambulance.

But deep down, I didn’t want anything to do with Julia.

I knew her illness couldn’t be spread by just being near her, but I couldn’t help feeling grossed out.

“He’s family. Mr. Thompson is her partner—he’ll take care of her,” I said, grabbing Remy and pushing him toward the gurney.

Remy looked over his shoulder at me. His dark eyes were full of pain and regret, so deep I almost felt it in my own chest.

Julia was lying there, barely hanging on. Her beautiful eyes had lost all their shine, but when she looked at me, she managed the faintest, weakest smile. Her voice was barely a whisper. “I’m sorry, Avery. Don’t blame me. I just—”

She didn’t get to finish. The doctors wheeled her out.

Her left hand slipped off the edge, reaching for me, as if she still had something left to say.

The investigator was fast. I’d barely finished showering when he called back with answers about Julia.

When I opened the file, I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. A chill ran down my spine, like something evil had crawled into the room.

It was way worse than I’d imagined.

Julia didn’t just have HIV; she had full-blown AIDS—plus late-stage syphilis and gonorrhea.

Did Remy even know how bad it was?

I was shocked. Furious. I wanted to wring Remy’s neck for being so reckless.

I grabbed my phone and called him—three times. No answer.

I couldn’t wait. I snatched my car keys, scooped up Cindy, and tore out of the house, racing straight for the hospital.
