Remy finally showed up—after a whole day and night where I’d nearly died because of him.
He stormed in, jaw clenched, eyes burning with rage, looking exactly like a jealous husband who’d just caught his wife cheating.
“Let go of my wife. Don’t touch her.” Remy’s voice thundered. In a split second, his eyes turned bloodshot and he threw a punch straight at Elliot.
Remy had never lost it like this, not even during the worst times at work. It was like something inside him had snapped.
He organized Julia’s life. Lied to me for her. Took Cindy away because of her. Almost killed me—all for Julia. It’s obvious who he really cares about.
So what’s with the performance?
Who’s he trying to convince?
Throwing a punch to protect his pride is easy enough for him. I’m the one left dealing with all the pain.
My nerves were shot—I could barely breathe.
If I fell from this height, my tailbone would never recover.
Almost dying was already bad enough. If I broke my tailbone on top of that, I’d be stuck in bed for weeks. Forget meeting my mentor. Forget working on any new projects.
And this was Elliot we were talking about. The CEO. A big name in science. A powerhouse in business. National role model. His family’s influence is rumored to be bottomless.
Remy must be out of his mind to pick a fight with a man like him.
“Boss, watch out!” It was all I could get out—a panicked shout.
But of course, Elliot was Elliot.
I took the bowl and sipped quietly, pretending Remy didn’t even exist.
Marian’s cooking put mine to shame. The soup was sweet and creamy, with oats that made it even more comforting and rich.
Remy finally managed to catch his breath. He steadied himself and walked over, forcing down his anger and trying to sound concerned. “I just got home and saw blood all over the bed. Avery, are you okay? Where are you hurt?”
So he left me on the brink of death and didn’t come home for a day and a night. He knew exactly what kind of shape he left me in, and now he has the nerve to ask if I’m okay?
What a joke.
Fine. If he wants an answer, I’ll give him one. Nothing stings more than the plain truth.
I set down the soup, held up my wrists in front of his face, and said, “I’m fine. Not a mark on me. You just tied me to the headboard with your tie, that’s all. Maybe a little too tight. You just covered my head with the comforter, so I couldn’t breathe or move. I just got so dehydrated from sweating that I nearly died, but I’m still here because someone came to save me in time. That’s all.”
