By nightfall, Caroline felt a sudden chill in the air.

She counted the days in her head. It had been several days since the acid rain stopped.
In her last life, the deep freeze came just a few days after the acid rain ended.
She frowned slightly and looked at Raven. “Do you feel it? It’s getting colder, isn’t it?”
When she touched him, she noticed his fur had gotten much thicker.
Animals could sense weather changes far better than humans. And since she’d been bathing Raven and Jet in spring water mixed with acid rain, their mutation speed had accelerated.
A bad feeling stirred in her chest; the deep freeze was coming soon.
Just then, a thunderous rumble shook the ground.
The floor beneath her feet began to sway violently.
Her heart stopped for a second. She had lived through earthquakes before, and that terror came rushing back.
But something felt wrong. “No, this isn’t right,” she whispered after she calmed herself down.
“The timing’s off. The quake shouldn’t be now.”
From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of dust rising outside the window.
She stumbled toward the glass door, and what she saw made her blood run cold.
Buildings were collapsing, one after another.
It started with a twelve–story apartment that suddenly crumbled. When it fell, it slammed into the next building, bringing that one down too.
Within seconds, it turned into a horrifying chain reaction, like a row of giant dominoes falling one by one.
Finally, a fifteen–story tower tipped sideways and smashed into a thirty–story building beside
The taller building groaned with a deafening crash–but somehow, it held.

Barely.
The destruction stopped there.

Even so, in the blink of an eye, more than a dozen buildings had turned into heaps of debris under the acid–soaked sky.
No one could say how many lives had just ended in those collapsing homes.
Most of those fallen buildings were old, neglected for years, and weakened further by the endless rain.
She could tell by their size; none of them were new or tall.
And Caroline knew this was only the beginning.
Soon, more would fall.
The collapse of the building felt like a ticking time bomb planted in everyone’s heart.
Those who lived in high–rise apartments began to panic–what if their building was next?
Some saw the tower across from them crumble and thought about jumping to escape.
But they didn’t stand a chance. The falling stones came crashing down, hitting them hard— then everything went silent.
Caroline’s group gathered to discuss what to do next. To everyone’s surprise, Tyler pulled out three glider–like devices.
“Just in case,” he said calmly.
Caroline’s eyes lit up. The equipment had no brand labels, but the material was tough and well made.
She was sure that Tyler must have gotten them through special means before the world fell
apart.
Caroline glanced at him. How many secrets is this man hiding?
She took the gear without arguing.
Deep down, she knew their building would hold.
In her last life, only old, poorly maintained apartments had collapsed.

Even if they’d survived the acid rain, they couldn’t withstand the disasters that came later.
But this one was different. She remembered passing it before–it had stood firm in the city
center.
And this time, she’d personally coated its walls with anti–corrosion material before the world went down. It should be even stronger now.
What distressed her was the deep freeze that could arrive at any moment.
When the meeting ended, Caroline mentioned how the temperature seemed to be dropping. “Raven’s fur feels thicker than before,” she added.
Tyler was intrigued. He reached out to touch the Raven’s fur, his face turning serious. “Animals sense environmental changes faster than we do,” he said. “If Raven’s evolving, it might be warning us–the winter this year will be harsher than ever. There’s no electricity, no heating. Everyone should wear more layers at night and stack up blankets or furs by the windows to keep the cold out.”
Caroline was pleased by his quick thinking. Taking Raven with her, she went back to her apartment to have her meal.
Tonight’s dinner: creamy Cajun–style pasta.
There weren’t many people left in the building. She didn’t have to worry about the smell giving her away.
After finishing her pasta, she checked the items JunkEater had produced in her storage space. It was already past ten.
Today’s loot, fittingly enough for the coming deep freeze, was two pairs of thick, heavy wool socks.
