Farm One had puffed up two strange lumps again. Caroline had no idea what weird thing would grow out of them next.

That night, she laid her mink coat beside her bed and stuffed the stove full of firewood, ready for the deep freeze that could hit anytime.

She didn’t expect it to come so soon. In the middle of the night, Raven woke her up by licking her face.

Caroline blinked open her eyes and saw the worried look in Raven’s eyes.

Her whole body felt icy cold–hands and feet numb.

She grabbed the thermometer and gasped. The room had dropped to 9°F below zero.

Caroline quickly threw on her mink coat and rushed to the stove to light a fire.

Once the flames finally started, she noticed something wrong–Jet was gone.

“Where’s Jet?”

Caroline shouted anxiously at the big black dog lying on the bed.

Raven shifted, revealing Jet curled up beneath her belly.

The poor bird let out a weak chirp.

Caroline rushed over and found Jet trembling hard, his little body nearly frozen.

The sudden drop in temperature must’ve hit it too fast. Jet’s mutation wasn’t complete yet–it couldn’t handle the cold.

“Raven, you saved him,” Caroline said, her voice shaking.

Raven had sensed the cold first. He had dragged the fainted Jet under his belly for warmth and then worked hard to wake Caroline up.

Caroline thought about putting Jet back into her storage space, but then she noticed something. Tiny hairs were growing on Jet’s body.

That wasn’t there before.

“Good boy,” she said, setting down some food in front of him. “Eat up, Jet. The faster mutate, the stronger you’ll be.”

She told Raven to stay still and keep Jet warm until he was done mutating.

Then, wrapping herself tightly in her coat, she dashed out the door and started banging on Tyler and Kay’s rooms.

In her past life, she remembered this night well. When the temperature crashed, many people froze to death in their sleep.

Once you slipped into unconsciousness from the cold, it was almost impossible to wake up again.

Tyler opened the door quickly. He was bundled up in his coat. He looked relieved when he saw her. “The temperature just dropped fast,” he said. “I was about to wake you guys.”

Caroline nodded, saying nothing more. She ran to Kay’s door and pounded again and again— but no one answered.

She kept knocking for several minutes, heart pounding.

“Let me try.”

Tyler squeezed past and pushed Caroline aside.

He kicked open Kay’s door in one motion.

They rushed in and found Kay unconscious on the bed.

Caroline fished a small thermos from a bag and cupped Kay in her arms. She fed Kay warm water, one sip at a time.

Slowly, Kay came back, still groggy.

Caroline wrapped her in the mink coat she picked up from the foot of the bed.

Tyler hauled a propane tank and a portable stove from the kitchen and lit it fast.

After a while, Kay’s eyes cleared. She looked like someone who had just come back from the brink. Kay stared at them, trembling. “Thank you. I didn’t expect the temperature to drop so fast,” she whispered.

Caroline didn’t say much.

Kay’s health had been improving over the last few days, but she was still weak.

Caroline had told her to eat more to build strength.

“Well, the three of us made it through,” Caroline said, giving a rare small smile.

The deep freeze was brutal. The first night was the worst.

Sudden cold killed people fastest.

That night, many who waited for government rescue died at home.

But the worst was yet to come.

By morning, Reese suddenly raced up to the 66th floor and pounded on the stairwell door. “Caroline! Tyler! Help Jonathan! He’s dying! Please!” she cried.

Caroline snorted. She had been waiting for this.

She opened the door. Reese stood there, panicked. When she saw Caroline’s mink coat, greed and jealousy flickered across her face.

“Jonathan is dying. His hands and feet are frozen. They’re dark and purple. Please, please save him,” Reese begged with clenched teeth.

Caroline’s eyebrow lifted.

She walked back to her apartment without answering.

Reese thought Caroline didn’t care. She exploded with rage. “Caroline, you’re heartless! You two were together once! You’d let him die? Shame on you! Bitch! His family would make sure you pay for this!”
