This time, Raven ate much slower than before. By the end, he almost couldn’t finish his food.

But since he hated wasting food, he forced himself to eat everything anyway.

And after a few days of careful watching, Caroline discovered something amazing. Raven could change his size at will! He could grow huge or shrink back to his normal form whenever he wanted.

Even his intelligence had improved a bit–especially when it came to teasing Caroline.

Before, his pranks were simple: turning on the air conditioner or sneaking up on her when she was in the bathroom. But now?

Now he could make himself enormous. Sometimes when she opened a door, all she saw was a wall of black fur. She’d push and shove, but the “wall” wouldn’t move unless she bribed him

with snacks.

He had turned into a bandit. “I own this house, human. Pay the toll if you want to pass!”

Caroline nearly lost her mind.

And Jet–the little bird–was in on it too!

Raven couldn’t tell when she was coming home, so Jet acted as his lookout.

When Caroline realized this, she had had enough. She grabbed both of them by the scruffs

That finally made them behave.

Caroline could tell Raven was just excited about his new ability and showing off.

A few days passed like that; Caroline hardly talked to her neighbor during that time.

A few days passed quietly. The snow outside grew heavier, though it still wasn’t deep enough to bury a whole floor overnight.

Caroline checked the time and thought back to her last life. From what she remembered, after the first few snowstorms, the real blizzard would hit in about ten days.

Before that happened, she decided to make one more trip outside.

She had planned to use the car Patricia left behind, but Tyler had wrecked it.

The other vehicles in her storage space weren’t built for snowstorms.

Caroline turned her eyes toward the sleeping Raven beside her. “Well,” she muttered, “guess you’re my ride now.”

That morning, Caroline had just finished getting dressed and was taking out the parts old sidecar she’d unpacked earlier from her storage space. She planned to turn them into a sled so Raven could pull supplies through the snow.

But before she could start, Raven suddenly stood up from its nap, ears perked, staring toward the front door. Caroline instantly knew–someone was at the stairwell.

Sure enough, moments later came the sound of pounding on the door.

Caroline quickly threw on her coat, grabbed a weapon, and stepped out with Raven.

Tyler and Kay appeared at the same time, both armed as well.

Ever since their trip to Building B, all three had become much more cautious.

Downstairs, there had been chaos in the past few days, but no one dared to climb to their floor.

The remaining survivors kept to themselves, and that was how Caroline’s group preferred it. They didn’t care how others lived, as long as they stayed away.

The three exchanged tense glances. Tyler gave a silent nod, signaling he’d handle it. He slowly moved toward the door.

When he pulled open the inner latch, a woman stumbled inside–covered in blood.

Her hair was a tangled mess, her layers of clothing torn and filthy.

For a second, Caroline couldn’t even tell who she was.

Then, recognition dawned. She frowned and asked, “You’re Bethany’s daughter–in–law, right?”

Yes–she was.

The woman at the door was Alison Grant, Bethany’s daughter–in–law. After Bethany’s death, both her husband and son had also perished.

Alison, though, wasn’t exactly someone who inspired sympathy.

She was the kind of person people called “pitiful, yet hateful.”

Before she married, she’d grown up in an ordinary home with parents who spoiled her rotten.

They loved her too much and protected her too much. Alison turned out overly naïve and soft–hearted.

Then she met Richard–Bethany’s son–and they quickly fell in love.
