Alison thought she’d found true love. She refused to marry anyone but Richard, even though her parents begged her not to.
Her parents could see what that family was like. They didn’t want their daughter to suffer.
What followed was two years of constant fighting.
Her parents, who once doted on her, grew exhausted. They almost disowned her.
Her father pleaded, “Alison, I don’t want you to suffer. If you give this up now, you only lose two years of your youth. If you marry him, you could suffer for 20. Trust me! I only want what’s best for you.”
Alison didn’t see it that way. She still thought Bethany was a good person, and she would treat her kindly.
The pressure from Alison’s parents nearly broke her and Richard
apart.
Then Bethany came up with a plan that Alison should get pregnant before the wedding.
Alison agreed. She did get pregnant.
That changed everything. Bethany’s family used it to trap Alison. They never paid a proper wedding gift and made her life miserable after she moved in.
They called Alison shameless and worthless. They said she had no virtue.
Alison was hell–bent on marrying Richard. She refused her parents‘ plea to terminate the pregnancy. That drove a deeper wedge between her and them.
She pushed herself into a place with no one to rely on. She became an easy target.
During the apocalypse, when food and clothing ran short, Bethany bullied her more. They nearly sold her to trade for grain.
When Bethany died, Alison felt a rush of relief.
She thought her husband, who had once been kind to her, would finally treat her nicely. Alison hoped he’d care for her and their child.
Alison didn’t get the chance. That same night she lost them both, her husband and her son.

The man who had once been kind, the man who later sided with Bethany and mistreated her, was dead.
Her baby, the one she carried and cherished, had died too.
Alison was furious. She wanted revenge.
Cut off from communication, she had no way to contact her parents.
It felt like the world had shrunk to nothing.
She had no purpose left, except revenge.
Alison knew who had done it: that disheveled Wayne who beat his wife and killed her child.
For days she planned.
Today, her plan worked.
She had one thought now.
Alison walked up to the 66th floor and watched the door opposite open.
Covered in blood and grime, she looked at the people there and smiled.
“Who’s Caroline? I heard you’re the toughest one in this building.
“I want to ask you something. Please kill me.”
Caroline looked at the woman, whose eyes were dull and unfocused, her mind clearly on the edge. Her face hardened.
Back in the apocalypse, Caroline had met plenty of people who wanted to die.
Some had lost their families. Some were too crippled to go on. Some just couldn’t handle the horror of the world anymore.
And yes, she had killed one who asked her for help before.
It happened after the insect disaster.
Her team had gone scavenging in a warehouse, looking for supplies.
There, they found a man half–devoured by bugs.

His leg was nothing but bone, his organs were exposed, and his face was mangled beyond recognition.
He had begged them to end it.
Caroline had been the closest one.
So she did it. One quick stab to the heart.
He died in a second–smiling.
Caroline believed it was a smile of relief, almost peaceful.
But this woman in front of her was different.
Caroline glanced her up and down, then said coldly, “If you want to die, do it yourself. Or come at me and give me a reason. If you don’t even have the courage to do that, what makes you think you can endure this?”
She didn’t bother talking anymore. This was the apocalypse–pity didn’t keep you alive. Caroline shut the door.
“Please! Somebody kill me! I’m begging you! Kill me, please!”
Alison pounded on the door with all her strength, shouting until her voice cracked.
Why was it so hard to die?
She had thought about jumping off the building, but she didn’t have the courage.
So she came here to the people on the 66th floor, the ones everyone called monsters, hoping they’d do it for her.
But they didn’t care.
She had already taken revenge, seduced that awful man, waited until he fell asleep, and killed him.
Caroline thought that after that, she could finally leave this world.
But now, she realized even after everything, she still couldn’t die.
