The weasel didn’t flinch when it saw Caroline. Instead, its eyes glinted with a bold challenge, as if daring her to move.

But when its gaze locked on Jet, the bird flying nervously above, those eyes lit up even more.

Everyone knew what weasels loved mostbirds and poultry. Before the world fell apart, no chicken coop ever survived one of these things.

Jet dared not make a sound. It circled restlessly in the air, wings twitching uneasily.

Meow!

Meow!

Behind Caroline, the mutant cats grew restless. Their low growls filled the hallway.

She noticed that the black cat seemed to be their leader.

It glared at the weasel with burning hatred, wanting to attack. But something about the scent of the dead white cat near Caroline made them hesitate.

Caroline gripped her knife tight, her heart pounding. She kept her eyes on both sides, worried

sick about Raven.

She could jump into her storage space at any second if things went wrong, but Raven was still missing. If she left now, he might never find her again.

The weasel’s eyes suddenly shifted toward her, then flicked up to Jet circling nervously in the air. Caroline realized its real target was Jet.

She quickly decided to hide Jet in her storage space.

Her hand reached up, mind focused on pulling the bird to safety.

But in that split second, the weasel moved first.

It shot out of the hole like lightning, so fast that Caroline could barely catch its shape.

Its body twisted midair, claws stretched forward, heading straight for Jet.

At that exact moment, another shadow burst out of the same hole right behind it.

The ice at the stairwell corner shattered with a deafening crack, like something enormous had rammed it from below.

Then came a thunderous sound, an enormous jaw bursting from the ice and snapping shut around the leaping weasel.

The noise was chaos itselfsplintering ice, the cats hissing and screeching, and the weasel’s scream echoing through the stairwell.

And under it all, heavy, rough breathing.

When everything went quiet again, Caroline saw the mutant cats scatter into the darkness, tails low in fear.

And then she saw it. A massive dog’s head filled the broken stairwell, steam rising from its

nose. Raven.

He was enormous nowat least ten feet tallhis body blocking the entire stairway.

His jaws clamped tight around the weasel, his chest heaving as he breathed hard.

His massive eyes locked on Caroline, glowing with wild heat that hadn’t faded from the fight. Steam puffed from his nostrils as he breathed hard, muscles trembling from the burst of

power.

The weasel wasn’t dead yet. It squealed, thrashing and clawing desperately at Raven’s muzzle- but this time, the tables had turned.

A flicker of impatience flashed in Raven’s eyes. He bit down hard, and Caroline heard a sharp crackthe sound of bone snapping.

The weasel went still at once.

Blood poured from its body, spilling onto Raven’s fur.

In the freezing air, the warm blood quickly hardened into red chunks of ice.

Jet leapt up, landing right on Raven’s head, hopping and flapping with excitement.

Since Caroline had told him not to talk, he pecked at Raven’s head instead.

Raven shook his head roughly, annoyed, making the scene almost comical.

For the first time, Caroline felt the tightness in her chest ease. They’d escaped death.

She glanced at the shattered ice but couldn’t tell what Raven had gone through beneath it.

Through the broken surface, she could see a large hollow area underneathmost likely dug out by the mutant weasel itself.

It had turned that space into its nest.

Scattered across the floor below were several animal skeletons.

Judging by their shapes, they looked like cats.

Among them was a halfeaten mutant cat, its pure black fur still visible.

It was smaller in size but looked almost identical to that black mutant cat they’d seen before- the one that resembled Raven.

The weasel’s claws were still stained dark red, proof that it had been feeding when Raven found it.

No wonder those cats had hated the weasel so much.

Caroline ran her hand through Raven’s fur. Her heart was still racing from what had just happened.

It had been a close call, but it also proved just how strong Raven had become.

After comforting both Raven and Jet, she urged them to move.

Outside, the sky was already turning pale graythe first hint of dawn.

Caroline knew she had to hurry back. If she waited any longer, someone might notice their

tracks.

With that thought, she urged Raven and Jet to move. The three of them quickly made their way to the top floor.

To her surprise, as they went up, the mutant cats didn’t attack again. They stayed hidden in the shadows, quietly watchingtoo afraid to come any closer.
