Countless glowing green eyes stared from the shadows of every floor, unblinking and silent.
Caroline looked around. The place was still littered with rotting meat–food no human would ever touch, but a feast for those mutant cats.
If she guessed right, the mutant cats would stay here for a while longer, at least until every last
scrap was gone.
As for her, she wasn’t coming back.
Not even if Raven hadn’t finished his task.
By the time that thought passed, Caroline had reached the top floor. “Raven,” she asked, glancing at the big black dog beside her, “did you get anything from down there?”
Raven tilted his head, as if he didn’t understand.
She repeated the question several times, but the dog didn’t respond at all.
“I just showed you how to collect things and take them out. Show me what you got.”
Still nothing.
Caroline frowned. What’s going on? She could’ve sworn he’d gotten smarter before. Why did he suddenly seem dumber after one trip out?
But now wasn’t the time to figure it out.
She climbed out the window.
Overnight, snow and wind had nearly buried it.
Any later, she’d have to dig her way out.
Pulling out her sidecar, she stowed Jet back into her storage space, then clipped a leash onto Raven. Together, they headed back toward the apartment.
Once they reached the building, Caroline hid in a quiet corner. She stored Raven away, then changed into clean clothes inside the storage space. Better safe than sorry. She didn’t want anyone to recognize her outside. Moving close to the wall, she slipped quietly into the building.

Every step was cautious and soundless. She finally reached the 66th floor and unlocked her
door.
The moment she stepped inside, Caroline drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly.
That trip had been a close call, but she made it.
She still had plenty to do, but first on the list–Raven needed a bath. Badly.
She hurried into the storage space.
The second she stepped in, Jet fluttered right up to her, chattering nonstop.
“Human! Human! Jet thought, Jet is going to die just now!”
“Human, Jet did great today! Can Jet get extra treats?”
“Human, Raven stinks! His dirty blood got all over Jet’s feathers!”
Caroline sighed and rubbed her temples.
He just wouldn’t stop talking. It was like he had to make up for all the words he didn’t say earlier. Once he started, there was no end to it.
After ranting about everything that had happened, he went into ridiculous detail.
And the funniest part? He kept referring to himself in the third person–calling himself “Jet” over and over.
Caroline groaned. She remembered the new fantasy drama she’d recently watched–one with an annoying, fake–sweet villain who also called herself by name all the time.
“Jet this, Jet that.” Just thinking about it made Caroline’s eye twitch.
Without another word, she pulled out a big plastic tub from her storage space, filled it with spring water and a bit of acid rain. Without a word, she grabbed both Raven and Jet and tossed
them in.
The moment Jet hit the water, his mouth finally shut.
He started splashing and flapping instead, like an overexcited duck. Caroline sighed in relief. Silence–finally.
She grabbed a brush and started scrubbing Raven down.

The big dog closed his eyes halfway, letting out soft grunts of comfort whenever she scrubbed under his chin.
He looked completely relaxed, happy even.
Maybe it was the first time in a while he’d gotten to stretch his legs and run wild.
Seeing both of them in such good spirits, Caroline’s mood lifted too.
Raven was filthy, though.
After one tub of murky water, she had to replace it with another.
Jet kept paddling around like a little duckling, so she threw a rubber duck into the water to keep him busy.
When she was done, Raven smelled fresh and clean. His black fur was fluffy and warm.
Caroline then filled one last tub for herself and sank into the water.
Before she knew it, she drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up, it was to the sound of Raven shaking off water beside her.
She glanced at the clock. It was two in the afternoon. Her stomach growled like thunder.
Quickly, she got up and dried off Raven and Jet.
She felt much more awake herself.
Then she turned to Raven and asked again, “Did you get the supplies?”
Raven tilted his head, tongue hanging out, eyes blank. He didn’t seem to understand a word.
Caroline frowned. Maybe he looked fine on the outside, but what if he’d hurt himself inside?
Why did this dog turn dumb?
She checked him carefully again–no wounds, no bruises. Only then did she breathe a little easier.
“Guess you’re just a bit shaken up, huh?” she murmured, patting his wet fur. After all, he was just a dog. Maybe the whole adventure had scared him more than she thought. She’d ask again later, once he was ready.
