Right beside the antique market stood a huge wholesale produce market. It was known as the biggest one in the city.

Caroline headed straight inside, buying almost everything she saw.

She chose winter jackets, sweatpants, and loungewear. She picked out dozens of tough but cozy sets in many different styles. She told the shopkeepers to send the clothes to her home. Of course, she explained that she was buying them for resale. Since her body size was pretty average, she just ordered everything in the usual sizes.

She also stocked up on all kinds of dried foodslike button mushrooms, soy protein strips, wheat tortillas, oyster mushrooms, and dried sea lettuce. Everything was sold in large packs for cheap prices.

Next came the seasonings. She bought a bunch of soy sauce, vinegar, peanut butter, sunflower seed oil, mushroom sauce, and other basics. She paid right away.

The best surprise was when she met a stall selling fresh wild greens. These are the kind of plants that usually grew in the hills and are rarely sold in the city. They were perfect for making ravioli or savory pies. Normally, you’d only find them if you drove near the countryside, where local farmers might sell them. She never expected to find them here.

Without thinking twice, Caroline bought every last bunch from the seller.

She also bargained for some seasonal vegetables and arranged a time for the seller to deliver them to her house.

Once she was done at the produce market, she turned her head and spotted another big market across the street, this one filled with books and collectibles.

Since she was already there, Caroline headed straight inside.

Thinking about how hard life could be without power or running water in the future, she collected stacks of bookscomics, novels, cookbooks, tool guides, maps, and even manuals on things she normally wouldn’t touch, such as repair work, animal care, and farming.

If she believed it could help her later, she bought it.

When she put everything into her car, it was so full that not even one more book could fit.

Checking her watch, she realized she had been out almost five hours. She drove back to the jewelry shop.

Emmett had already finished the chain exactly the way she’d ordered.

After paying she got back into her car, carefully stored away the books and weapons she had bought, and prepared to keep shopping

As she walked by one stall, something strange happened. The gemstone on her chest shook a little,

Her instincts, sharpened by surviving the apocalypse, reacted right away.

She froze, stepped back about three feet, and the gemstone shook again.

Kight in front of her was a street stall claiming to sell antiques.

But with just one look, she could tell the items were all fake, meant to trick people who didn’t know better,

Feeling uneasy, Caroline bent down to take a closer look.

Hello, Miss, looking for something?the middleaged stall owner asked.

He looked excited, like he hadn’t sold anything in a long time.

Caroline’s eyes swept over the table. Most things were cheap imitations and fake bracelets. Only one rough stone in the comes seemed unusual.

She reached out, and the moment her fingers touched the gold are, the gemstone on her chest shook even harder.

She knew she’d found the right thing.

How much is this one?she asked.

The owner’s eyes flickered. He clearly thought he could fool her because she looked young.

Before he could even answer, Caroline grabbed the gold ore and said, This is gold ore, but it doesn’t look like it has much gold inside. The shape is ordinary, and it’s pretty small. Most people would just think it’s a little nicer than a regular stone. I’ll pay you 1.000 since I like it. Deal?

Two minutes later, she left with the gold ore tucked safely in her pocket.

When no one was nearby, she quietly put the ore into her

space.

The moment her mind entered, the stone suddenly burst apart, throwing out a few blue sparks that disappeared right away.

Then, the whole storage spa

began to change.

Thick mist rolled across, and a strong wind whipped around her.

Caroline panicked a little, worried those blue sparks might be harmful.

But once the mist faded and the wind stopped, she noticed a new stretch of black soil, about 1,000 square feet, had appeared.

Just looking at it, she could tell the soil was rich and full of life!

Does this mean the storage space has been upgraded?

Caroline’s hands tightened in excitement. She walked around the market a few more times, but nothing else made her gemstone respond.

She guessed this must be the way to upgrade the storage space, though she still had no idea how it worked or why.

Since she hadn’t stocked enough supplies yet, she decided to leave it for now. After she had stored enough supplies, she would figure out the mystery later.

On the way back, she passed a small shop selling seeds and went inside. She bought a variety of seeds, such as fruit seeds, flower seeds, and everything she could find.

She planned to start planting in the new black soil soon.

By the time she finally got home that night, Caroline’s legs ached from walking

She had to admit that her body just wasn’t strong enough to handle running around all day.

vegetable seeds,

In her previous life, she had trained hard so she could live through the apocalypse. But this time, her body wasn’t ready yet.

Fortunately, there were still a few months left before the apocalypse began. She believed she could rain again and turn back into the Caroline who had survived ten long years of hardship.

She didn’t waste time. She grabbed her small notebook and started writing down what she needed to do next. She drew a big circle around the words Get stronger!

Then, Caroline tested her storage space and found our it could keep things fresh! Not just that. When she put a cup of hot water in at 185F, it came back out still at 183 F. It was like magic!

Just then, she remembered something very important.

She needed to get a dog. But not an ordinary one, a special one!

When the apocalypse first started, there was acid rain with a mild corrosive effect. People had already stopped going outside.

Weather experis said the strange rain was caused by global pollution and unknown changes in the atmosphere. At first, since the acid wasn’t too strong most people didn’t pay much attention.

But later, the rain kept falling harder and harder, flooding some twostory buildings.

People could no longer shop for food or live normally, and that’s when fear and chaos began.

But that was just the beginning.

After the acid rain came a snowstorm. The temperature suddenly dropped to below -140°F. With no electricity or water, people barely made it through. The snow didn’t stop for three months and even covered buildings that were ten floors tall.

It was then that people found out that some animals had mutated! They grew bigger, stronger, and smarter, becoming valuable tools for survival in the apocalypse.

Now, Caroline planned to buy a retired military dog.

She remembered that in just a few days, the local military would sell a group of dogs that didn’t pass training.

When training police or military dogs, some are rejected for reasons like hyperactivity, timidity, or low stamina.

Even though these dogs weren’t good for official work, they were still much tougher than normal house pets.

In her previous life, Caroline had thought about getting one but never made a choice.

This time, she was set on picking a strong and obedient military dog from the rejects.

She pulled out her phone and started searching for information.

Sure enough, she found news about an auction for rejected military dogs.

Her heart raced with excitement.

She tried messaging the person who posted the info, and to her surprise, they replied. They even agreed she could visit the military base the next morning to see the dogs.

Caroline was thrilled and so excited that she couldn’t fall asleep. Instead, she decided to test her newly upgraded storage

space.

She had a packet of flower seeds, so she scattered them inside with her mind and then finally went to sleep.

Usually, seeds need several days before they sprout, but she wanted to know if the black soil would make them grow faster or do something special.

She had a feeling this black soil wasn’t ordinary.

The next morning, Caroline arrived at the military base.

A tall officer in uniform came over with a smile. Ms. Sinclair, nice to meet you.”

Yesterday, Caroline used her memories from her previous life to track down the dog auction information and then contacted the person in charge.

To her surprise, the officer explained that there were actually two retired military dogs available. They weren’t suitable for the auction, but he asked if Caroline was interested.

She agreed without a second thought.

She remembered that in her previous life, some of these rejected military dogs had sold for a million dollars each. That was, way out of her budget.

The officer introduced himself as Lieutenant Niko Richter. He was in charge of the military base’s dog training. He was the one Caroline had contacted online.

As they walked, Niko asked Caroline many questions about how much she knew about military dogs or raising dogs in general

Back when her parents were sull alive, her family had owned a few slogs, and she had also played with sorae military degsg/4

before. Because of that, she could answer his questions without trouble.

At the training base, the loud barks of dogs filled the air. Caroline saw 12 dogs being photographed to be posted online.

There were eight Shepherds, three Labradors, and one Doberman.

In an instant, Caroline’s eyes locked on the Doberman.

It had shiny black fur and a strong body. Sitting down, its head was already as high as her chest. Even without any mutations, this dog looked fierce enough to make any intruder back off.

By coincidence, this Doberman was one of the retired military dogs that weren’t suitable for the auction.

Why did this Doberman retire?Caroline asked Niko, trying her best to hide how thrilled she felt.

He guided her a few steps forward. When they were about ten feet away, the Doberman slowly turned its head. Its huge head lowered slightly, and its narrow eyes shone with a sharp, threatening light. Just meeting its gaze sent a shiver through Caroline’s body.
