Then the man’s eyes flickered with a sharp glint. “The 66th floor,” he shouted. “There’s food up there! I’ve seen them move supplies up so many times! What do you say, everyone? You want to sit here and starve, watch your kids die in front of you–or do we fight for it?”
His words hit a nerve. Within moments, many people stood up.
Most of them were the ones who had long been unhappy with Francis for protecting the 66th floor.
Others had already been eyeing the supplies stored there.
Among the crowd, a pair of fierce eyes locked tightly on the man who spoke. The look in them was cold but determined.
The corners of that person’s mouth lifted slightly. After all these days in the shelter, the moment they’d been waiting for had finally come.
Up on the 66th floor, Caroline had just added more firewood to the stove before going back to sleep. When she woke up again, it was to the noisy crackle of voices coming through the walkie–talkie.
Lately, no one had caused them trouble. Even Francis usually contacted her through the radio, since it was easier that way. That’s why Caroline kept the device plugged in and powered on at all times.
Now, early in the morning, the sound of shouting outside made her frown in confusion. What on earth is going on?
She threw on clothes, grabbed Raven and Jet, and ran downstairs. Tyler and Denton were already waiting for her.
“What’s happening?” she asked.
Before they could answer, a thunderous roar echoed from below. “Hand over the supplies!
“You scumbags, working with the army!
“Stop hiding back there while we starve! You’ve got food and heat–give us what you’ve got!”
Even though she didn’t know exactly what had happened, Caroline could guess.
Something must have gone wrong on Francis’s end.
They were just caught in the middle–but the truth was, the people’s anger had been building for a long time. Seeing the privileges and supplies the 66th floor enjoyed had finally pushed them over the edge.
“Should we open the door?”
Tyler turned to look at Caroline.

opinion before making a move. He rarely decided on his own anymore.
Caroline’s eyes flicked toward the generator nearby.
“Don’t open the door. Increase the power,” she said coldly.
Without another word, Tyler walked over to the control panel and twisted a few switches.
A second later, screams erupted outside.
“Ahhh!”
“It’s electricity! Where did that come from?!”
“It hurts!”
“You stepped on me!”
The hallway turned into chaos.

After Ambrose had previously broken through the 64th floor door and damaged the electric grid, Tyler had reworked the entire wiring system.
He’d extended the grid outward by more than 8 inches.
That might not sound like much, but under normal voltage, the electricity didn’t reach that far. Once the power was boosted and a few buttons on the control panel were pressed, that small outer ring became fully active.
So anyone crowding near the door–thinking they’d be safe as long as they didn’t touch it–got hit hard.
They were packed so close together that the current ran through them one by one, from the front row to the back. No one escaped.
Those who could still move tried to run but ended up stepping on others, setting off more panic.
“What the hell are you people doing?!”
A roar thundered from the stairwell. It was Francis.
His face was dark, nearly dripping with rage.
