hapter 274 Sleeping Together
Caroline looked down. From where she stood, she couldn’t even see the end of the crowd–people filled the space below, packed shoulder to shoulder.
The moment the door to the 64th floor finally opened, murmurs rippled through the mob. Then, someone shouted from the crowd, “Hey, you on the 66th floor! Hand over your supplies! We’re starving out here!”
“Yeah!” another voice echoed. “You’ve got all the good stuff–meat, spices–we can smell it from down here!”
“You think you can eat like kings while we starve to death?”
Soon the shouting grew louder, wave after wave, until the entire crowd was roaring.
Their tone was full of self–righteous anger, as if the people from the 66th floor owed them something.
But because of the electric fence running across the door and the walls, no one dared step forward. A narrow strip of empty space remained between the furious crowd and the 64th floor entrance.
When Caroline and the others appeared, some of the people who had started to calm down suddenly got worked up again.
Someone even started cursing.
Caroline and her group were neatly dressed, wearing clean clothes and thick fur coats. Except for Denton, who had just arrived, even their dog looked strong and well–fed.
The sight only fueled the crowd’s jealousy–their eyes burned red with resentment. The anger that had been stirred up earlier flared once more.
There’s an old saying, “It’s not about the pie being small; it’s about who gets the biggest slice.”
Down in the lower floors of the shelter, everyone was equally miserable–hungry, cold, and barely surviving–so there was no room for envy.
But as long as people like Caroline existed, living well above them, those below couldn’t help but let dark thoughts take root in their hearts.
Francis had lost his temper by now. He shouted over the noise, but his voice was swallowed by the roar of the crowd.
He motioned to a few nearby soldiers, signaling them to grab a couple of the loudest troublemakers first- clearly someone was stirring things up on purpose.
But the second the soldiers moved, someone yelled, “Colonel Sutton is trying to use force on us!” Another voice followed right after. “He’s covering for that woman from the 66th floor. They’re sleeping together!”
Francis’s face went red. He almost pulled his gun again, but the soldier beside him quickly pressed his arm
down.

Chapter 274 Sleeping Together
There were just too many people–too noisy, too chaotic. He couldn’t even tell who had shouted.
“Son of a bitch!” Francis roared. “You think I can’t control you anymore? Fine! Arrest them all! Lock them in a room and let them starve for three days—then we’ll see who dares cause trouble again!”
His order cut through the chaos like a whip. For a moment, the crowd actually went quiet.
But the silence didn’t last. In seconds, the shouting came back even louder than before–now they were yelling that the army was corrupt, unfair, and cruel. Every time a soldier tried to pull someone out, more hands reached forward to block them.
“Stick together! We demand justice today!” someone screamed.
No one knew who said it, but the effect was instant–the mob pushed back. Two soldiers trying to drag a man away were grabbed and yanked right back by five or six others.
For a tense moment, both sides froze.
Then Caroline leaned toward Denton, her voice cold and steady. “That one–the one who shouted about Colonel Sutton and the woman from the 66th floor.”
She hadn’t spoken until now. She’d been quietly watching, studying the crowd.
Even though the scene was chaotic, that shout-“Colonel Sutton’s sleeping with the woman from the 66th floor!“–came from the same voice that had twice stirred the crowd before.
“And the one yelling for everyone to ‘stick together–that was him too,” Caroline added quietly.
Denton gave a small nod. He whispered something to Silver perched on his shoulder, then reached over and briefly cut the power to the door’s electric grid. With a slow creak, he pushed the heavy door open. The crowd fell silent for a moment as the supposedly impenetrable door cracked open.
But before anyone could move, a snow–white bird darted through the narrow gap and shot into the air like lightning.
“It’s a bird! Meat–it’s meat!” someone yelled.
“Catch it! Don’t let it get away!”
Hands shot up as people lunged for the bird, but Silver was far too fast. Not a single person even brushed a feather.
“See? The 66th floor has birds and dogs. They’ve got plenty of food! We’re not leaving empty–handed!” someone shouted.
