Chapter 287 That Rat Talked!

In just two or three days, those rats had grown back into enormous beasts.

They started hunting mutant cockroaches around the area and even gnawed on the walls.

What puzzled Francis was why they still hadn’t attacked.

It wasn’t until the last of the corpses were eaten clean that he finally understood.

Those rats had been saving them as food supplies!

They were breeding rapidly, using the corpses as nourishment, planning to multiply first and then feast on the survivors once they’d run out of other food.

And sure enough, another brutal battle broke out. Francis’s team lost a soldier before they managed to retreat into their modified vehicle.

The entire car was swarmed by mutant rats, their teeth tearing through two of the wheels.

Even so, they forced the vehicle forward for more than a mile.

But the rats refused to give up.

That was when Francis realized something strange.

Along the way, he saw all kinds of mutated creatures.

There were mutant dogs, mutant cats, and countless mutant cockroaches.

Yet the rats ignored everything else. Their beady eyes stayed locked on his car.

“We had no choice,” Francis said. “We checked our weapons and figured it was do or die. So I thought, might as well go after their leader–the mutant rat king–and take it down.”

The mutant rats had an incredible bite force. After driving less than a mile, the modified vehicle finally gave out. They decided to rush out and fight with everything they had.

But unexpectedly, the mutant rats suddenly withdrew.

Francis was taken aback. Then, he saw what appeared in front of them–a mutant python with a missing horn.

At that, Caroline could only stare at him in silence.

You’ve got to be kidding me, she thought. A snake? In the middle of winter? Shouldn’t it be hibernating? Then again, it’s a mutant python. Maybe its evolution made it immune to the cold.

“Damn it! That snake was vicious! It looked like it hated humans to the core. It came straight at us and tried to swallow the whole car! I was wondering what the rats were doing–turns out they ran off because they met their natural enemy!”

Out of options, Francis and his team had to abandon the car and run for their lives.

Luckily, his men were skilled. Knowing they couldn’t win the python, they bolted and found a building to hide in.

Over the next few days, their food ran out. In the end, they had no choice but to roast cockroaches for meals.

“Not gonna lie,” Francis said with a laugh, “roasted roaches actually tasted pretty good.”

At that point, Alger cut in, telling Francis about Caroline’s recent discovery at the shelter.

The moment Francis heard it, he shot up from the bed like a dying man suddenly revived. He completely ignored his injuries as he reached for Caroline’s hand.

But the movement tore at his wounds, and he howled, collapsing back down.

“Ah, damn it! I’ve been worrying about the shelter these past days, afraid you’d run out of food. Thank God, Caroline–you’re a lifesaver! From now on, you’re my boss! I would even call you that in public! Ah, damn, my wound’s splitting open again–Alger, take a look, quick!”

Francis, now in high spirits, started rambling again.

Caroline was used to his chatter by now. Smiling, she said, “Colonel Sutton, no need to call me that. I’ve helped the army out a lot this time–shouldn’t I get a little reward for that?”

Francis patted his bed. “Reward? Of course! I’ll make sure of it once I’m healed and done with those damn rats!”

Francis and his men had spent two more days surviving in the wild, nearly freezing to death.

Just when they thought they could finally make it back, the mutant rats returned.
