288 That Boy Must Die

The boy was easy to recognize–mostly because his mother had been notorious.

She was a shameless troublemaker, always scheming and stealing.

She was among the first group of women sent to the rear area.

But even after being sent back, she didn’t change. The moment she returned, she beat up an old lady just for an apple.

When the soldiers tried to discipline her, she couldn’t have cared less. She insulted them, calling one of the young soldiers a “bastard“. She had even tried to snatch his gun, shouting that soldiers only had power because they carried weapons.

That same day, they’d had enough and sent her right back to the rear area.

“Honestly, we always thought she had some mental issues,” said one of the soldiers who had gone out with Francis. He was lying on the steel bunk next to him, badly wounded but still conscious enough to speak.

Caroline nodded slightly. She figured the woman must have been mentally disturbed–maybe driven half–mad by something.

The woman’s son was always gloomy and quiet. He rarely talked to anyone and preferred tinkering with things by himself.

He even kept a small white mouse as a pet, carrying it around in his pocket like a treasure.

Later, when his mother was sent back to the rear area again, the boy insisted on going with her.

The soldiers said it was because some people in the shelter had set their eyes on his pet rat–they wanted to kill it and eat it.

Even for a couple of bites of meat, people had grown desperate enough to drool over it.

And so, the boy followed his mother to the rear area.

The soldiers hadn’t thought much of it at the time. The rear area was just an old building being refurbished–nothing too dangerous. They figured the boy would at least have his mother to look after him.

But before long, the woman was dead.

She’d promised another woman some benefits in exchange for help with labor.

After the work was done, she refused to pay up.

The two women got into a fight,

Normally, when someone caused trouble in the rear area and refused to behave, they were locked in a dark cell for a day without food.

But that night, the temperature dropped sharply. To keep herself warm, the troublesome woman stripped the clothes off the other

woman.

By morning, the other woman was dead.

Then came another brutal battle.

This time, Francis wanted to catch that boy no matter what. But after living among rats for so long, the kid moved like one. He was quick, nimble, darting in and out of shadows, even squeaking like a rat. With hundreds of mutant rats protecting him, catching him was impossible.

Another soldier went down, badly injured.

Francis finally gritted his teeth and ordered everyone to fall back.
