Chapter 289 The Unlucky Soul
For a moment, everyone fell silent.
They all knew–if that boy stayed alive, he would become a serious threat to the shelter sooner or later.
He was young and a little insane. After spending so long with those mutant rats, no one could tell what kind of twisted changes had
taken root inside him.
The fact that he could slaughter everyone in the rear area and then bring their severed heads all the way to the shelter just to provoke them–it showed he’d already gone completely mad with bloodlust.
It was a miracle that Francis and his team managed to make it back alive.
By now, the situation was clear.
Those heads must have been gnawed off by the rats, stuck on poles afterward, and then carried underground by the mutant rats through tunnels.
When they got close to the shelter, they simply pushed the heads up through the surface, creating that horrifying scene.
Francis had sent people to check the surroundings of the shelter, and sure enough, they’d found numerous rat tunnels beneath the snow–stretching far into the distance.
Now, some of the soldiers were already filling those tunnels in.
And if their guess was right, the rat king hide the boy was wearing probably came from the little white rat he used to raise.
Which meant, when that rat mutated into the rat king, it hadn’t eaten him.
However, it was unclear how that little rat eventually died, and how the boy came up with the idea to crawl into its skin and disguise himself as the rat king.
What mattered now was figuring out how to deal with the boy and his swarm as quickly as possible.
“This damn weather is too cold,” Francis grumbled. “The few of us barely made it back alive. It’s not exactly a good time to launch an attack. And I can’t get through to Commander Ball either–damn it all.”
Francis looked oddly funny, cursing nonstop while sucking on a lollipop.
He had called Caroline and the others over because they were capable. Maybe they could come up with a plan together.
Truthfully, Francis was running out of ideas.
After seeing so many of his men die, he knew he couldn’t afford another mistake.
“It’s best if none of us die. Injuries are fine–we’re all tough guys–but no dying, okay? My men are like my brothers!” Francis said while scratching his head in frustration.
Caroline watched helplessly as he scratched out three strands of hair.
“I might have an idea,” Tyler suddenly spoke up.

Caroline turned to look at him.
She had actually thought of something too.
Back when they were dealing with the mutant cats, she’d noticed that those cats were afraid of the mutant cat king’s corpse.
And she remembered that Tyler had a vest made from the hide of a mutant rat king.
He probably still had other parts of the rat king, too.
But before she could say anything, Tyler smirked and shot a glance at Denton beside him.
That look made Denton’s skin crawl. Oh no! Every time Tyler gave him that look, nothing good ever came out of it.
Then Tyler explained his plan, and Denton nearly dropped to his knees.
Even Caroline couldn’t help giving him a big thumbs–up.
Brilliant. One unlucky soul to save the crowd.
Tyler’s plan was simple.
