Being able to get fat during the apocalypse was honestly a kind of talent.

But Caroline wasn’t surprised. Dyson had always been chubby before everything went downhill–he’d only slimmed down when food got scarce. Now that life seemed more comfortable for him again, he’d clearly gained it all back.
“Oh, isn’t that Caroline? Huh, and that’s Captain Lowland, right? I didn’t know who he really was before. And the one next to him… that’s Brother Denton, isn’t it?”
Denton rolled his eyes hard. “Brother? Seriously? You’re with the Obsidian Fang, aren’t you, fat boy? Don’t try to act all friendly with me.”
Caroline, meanwhile, noticed something off. Dyson wasn’t just here for small talk. He had that fake grin, but his eyes were calculating.
Even though Denton had just insulted him, Dyson didn’t get mad. His round, greasy face just smiled wider as his gaze slid back to Caroline.
“Caroline,” he said cheerfully, “I risked freezing to death running over here from Building B just to see you. Look! I even brought you a gift.”
He struggled to pull a small box from under his coat. The box was beat–up and dented, clearly crushed under its own weight on the way over.
Caroline didn’t take it. She just stared, expressionless.
Unbothered, Dyson flipped the lid open himself. Inside was a sleek, compact mechanical crossbow, with three short bolts neatly lined up beside it.
“Pretty cool, right? This is one of our new weapons,” he said proudly. “Don’t be fooled by the size–it’s not a firearm, but it hits harder than a handgun. Some mutant animals have skin so tough that nothing can pierce it, but these bolts are made of a special alloy. They can punch straight through the scales of even the toughest mutant snakes we’ve found. What do you think? Pretty generous gift, huh?”
He pushed the box toward Caroline with both hands.
Caroline stepped back instead of reaching for it.
Tyler and Raven moved instantly, stepping in front of her. Raven bared his teeth and let out a low growl.
Behind them, Denton pointed angrily. “Hey, fatso, what’s your deal? You know how dangerous that thing is when it’s pointed at people? You wanna start something? ‘Cause I’m right here!”
Dyson quickly shut the box and held his palms up. “Whoa, whoa! Relax! We’re all friends here. No need to get so worked up. I just wanted to give Caroline a gift, that’s all. No harm meant.”
“Friends? You?” Denton shot back. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Haha, fiery as always,” Dyson said, smirking and putting his hands on his hips.
Caroline stopped Denton with a hand and got straight to the point. “What do you want, Dyson?”

Dyson rubbed his nose with a chuckle and set the box on the table. “I heard you’ve been making medicine. The army even gave you
your own lab, huh?”
Caroline frowned. Building B sure had fast intel.
That made her start to wonder, did they have a spy planted inside Building A?
She wasn’t wrong.
There really was a mole living among them–someone who had been secretly leaking every bit of information from Building A to Building B.
The spy wasn’t just anyone. It was Alison Grant, the daughter–in–law of Richard and Bethany–the same woman who had once begged Caroline to kill her after losing her family. When she failed to take her own life, she fled to Building B.
Now, she’d returned to Building A.
According to the shelter’s rules, returning residents were allowed to live in their original rooms if they wished. Alison moved right back in, blending in quickly with her neighbors and even a few of the soldiers.
