294 Someone From Building B

Jet stared at Raven with a dazed, almost dreamlike look. In their own way of communicating, he chirped excitedly. “Raven! Silver talked to me! She said Thank you!”

Raven rolled his eyes and smacked Jet lightly with his paw. “Snap out of it! Human’s calling you! Move it before she gets mad–or I’ll bite you myself!”

Dinner went pretty well after that. Once everyone had eaten their fill, they started talking about their next move–how to deal with

the rat king.

“The most important thing.” Tyler said calmly, “is to keep the rat king’s fur intact.”

Caroline frowned, analyzing the situation. “This one’s going to be tougher than the one we took down before,” she said.

Back then, when she and Tyler had gone to the grain warehouse, it was still early in the apocalypse, and the weather wasn’t nearly

this cold.

Now things had changed. These mutant animals kept evolving with the environment. The freezing temperatures and military hunting had forced the roaches, for example, to mutate again. Who knew what the rats out there–facing worse conditions and other mutated predators–had turned into by now?

If they waited too long, things might spiral out of control. And since that young rat king might lead his army to attack the shelter, they decided they’d have to set out within the next two days.

Caroline’s group technically lived apart from the main shelter, but they still kept close ties. Francis had proven himself reliable, and many of Caroline’s upcoming plans would need military support.

So she decided they should handle this crisis together.

As for Tyler and Denton…

Tyler was standing inside with a pair of binoculars, watching Building B across the street.

Caroline knew he didn’t trust that place. Even though the people in Building B hadn’t caused any trouble lately–and were even pretending to work with the army–Tyler was always on guard.

“Let’s move the day after tomorrow,” Caroline said. “I’ll check with Colonel Sutton to see how he wants to coordinate it, then we’ll head out together.”

Tyler and Denton both nodded in agreement.

They went over more details. Tyler even brought out a few items he’d made from the hide of the last mutant rat king.

One was a fur vest–bulletproof, lightweight, and incredibly warm. Caroline had seen how effective it was before.

The second was a whip, crafted from the rat king’s tail.

Denton swung it twice with practiced skill. His movements were sharp and smooth–it was clear he knew what he was doing. The whip looked almost alive in his hands, even flexible enough to grab things from a distance.

Grinning proudly, Denton said, “Caroline, the whip’s actually my specialty. I just don’t get many chances to use it. Tyler’s best weapon isn’t really his knife or his gun–it’s a wooden pole. Though his knife and shooting skills are also insane.”

Chapter 294 Someone From Building B

Caroline couldn’t help thinking that Tyler must’ve mastered the staff from all those times he used it to smack Denton. There were also some leftover body parts–nothing went to waste. Tyler had even kept the rat’s massive head.

The eyes had been removed, and it had been preserved, but those white fangs still looked terrifying.

Caroline examined the remains and suggested they could wrap some of the smaller bones or fur around their wrists or ankles. That way, they’d carry the rat king’s scent on them.

They had enough material for six people.

There were three of them, plus Raven. Jet and Silver could handle themselves in the air, so they didn’t need it. That meant Francis would have to send two more people from the army side.

The plan was set. Caroline decided to rest up and meet Francis first thing in the morning to discuss it.

But not long after she got home, a soldier radioed her from the 64th floor, asking her to come down.
