Chapter 297 Trap

During the army’s talks with Building B, the other side had seemed polite and even friendly. They didn’t want any direct conflict and had even warned the army to stock up on winter gear, hinting that the weather would get colder soon.

But every time the army asked to move into Building, B, they refused with different excuses. They even showed off their combat power to make it clear–if anyone pushed too hard, both sides would lose.

Francis had reported all this to Nathaniel, who told him not to act rashly.

Francis valued his soldiers deeply. He treated every one of them like his own people. So as long as Building A wasn’t overcrowded yet, he didn’t want to start a fight with Building B.

Especially since Building B had recently gained a new team–and a helicopter. That made him even more cautious.

“Right now, there aren’t many people inside Building B,” Francis said. “But from what I’ve seen, they’ve built a weapons lab, a farming lab, and even a hydroponic food base. The army’s pretty wary of that, but they claim they just want to survive. They even invited me over for a tour, saying they wanted long–term cooperation. They talked about ‘human unity‘ and all that crap.”

Francis’s face twisted as he spoke. “Damn it, I knew exactly what they were doing–just showing off their power. Basically saying, Don’t mess with us and we’ll all be fine.‘ Like I couldn’t read between the lines!”

Still, when Francis visited Building B, he couldn’t help being impressed.

He saw part of their weapons lab, and the people there explained how their weapons worked–including the bow and arrow set hey planned to gift to Caroline.

‘I saw the thing in action,” he said. “They were joking that no mutant animal had armor thick enough to need that much power. Then one of them looked right at me and said, ‘You’ll need it sooner or later.‘ Sure enough, a few days later, we ran into that golden bython with the broken horn. I swear, if I’d had one of their bows back then, I wouldn’t have been in such a mess.”

He stopped there and looked at the group.

Caroline stayed quiet, her face cold.

Tyler frowned, deep in thought.

Denton spoke up, unable to hold it in. “Wait, no way! How would Building B already know that mutant animals‘ scales were getting

ougher? And how could they have finished weapons for it ahead of time? Colonel Sutton, you’ve fought more of those things on the frontlines than any of us. You should understand them better than we do!”

Francis clicked his tongue. “That’s exactly what I’ve been wondering. But you know what shocked me even more? Yesterday, we were talking about those damn mutant cockroaches mutating again, right? We were still trying to figure out a plan then this morning, that fat guy from Building B shows up with a ‘gift‘ for us.”

He held up a hand. “They gave us a giant net designed to trap mutant cockroaches and a sonic device to drive them together! It’s like they already knew the cockroaches would evolve to follow smoke trails.”

Caroline nodded, summing it up. “Exactly. It’s like they’re always one step ahead.”

“Right! You’re spot on!” Francis slapped his thigh–then winced as the pain shot through his wound. “Damn it, when will this thing heal? Worst time to be injured. If Building B causes trouble, or that rat king kid shows up again, I’ll just hold everyone back.”
