Francis quickly raised his hand and waved it. “Come on, do you really think I’d send Caroline into danger? The army already owes her more than we can ever repay. Commander Ball’s life was saved by her medicine, remember? I may be rough around the edges, but I’m not the kind of man who lets his benefactor risk her life. Still, we do need to figure out what’s going on with Building B.”
He leaned back with a sly grin, one corner of his mouth lifting as his brow arched–though the motion tugged at a cut on his cheek, making him wince.
“So here’s my idea…
“That guy Dyson wants Caroline to go with him to see their leader, right? Then we agree to it.”
Tyler frowned immediately.
Francis motioned for everyone to calm down. “Wait, hear me out. Last time, I didn’t even get to meet their leader. This time’s our chance. But the meeting happens here–in Building A, not there.”
A mischievous glint flashed in his eyes. “They’re the ones asking for help, so they come to us. We’re not the ones begging for anything.”
Denton snapped his fingers. “Exactly! Let their leader come here. That’ll show them Caroline’s worth.”
Francis nodded. “Right. And Tyler, Denton–can you two sneak into Building B when the time comes? Think about it–while their leader’s over here with his guards, their place will be half empty. It’s the perfect time to do some digging.”
Then he winked. “I’ve got another little plan too. They think I haven’t noticed their spies sniffing around Building A? Ha! Maybe it’s time I feed them a few fake rumors.”
He gave a dry laugh. “If lies can serve the mission, I’ve got no problem using them.”
Caroline didn’t say much after that–this was between Francis and Dyson to settle. Her job was just to wait for the outcome.
But when she was about to leave, Dyson spotted her and tried to start a conversation. Francis immediately stepped in and blocked
him.
On the way back, Tyler was unusually quiet, head slightly lowered, his mood dark.
Denton leaned over and whispered to Caroline, “Tyler’s upset because Building B’s got their own labs running now. He hates it. Those people aren’t good news, and now that they’ve got power, who knows what kind of trouble they’ll stir up.”
Caroline didn’t reply, but she shared the same concern.
She was almost certain now–there was a reborn person inside Building B.
That was exactly why she had decided to meet them. She needed to know why they wanted her. Only face–to–face could she find out what they were really after and how to prepare.
Worst case scenario, she could abandon her place and move somewhere else—or hide in her storage space for a while.
But if things could stay peaceful, that’d be ideal. She was actually quite content with her life right now, and she still had plenty of plans to work on.

Later that evening, Francis came to the 66th floor. He sat down at Tyler’s place, eating dinner while explaining what he’d negotiated
with Dyson.
He told them that Building B had agreed to come over in two days. They’d finalize preparations tomorrow night and discuss strategy before the meeting.
But the more urgent task was for tomorrow morning–hunting down the rat king before the teenage rat king caused more problems.
Francis picked two soldiers to go with Caroline’s group and was in high spirits. He even grabbed Denton’s hand and gave him a heartfelt speech–mostly because Caroline and Tyler had dodged him in time.
He went on and on about how grateful he was for everyone on the 66th floor, saying they’d helped him through countless difficulties.
