There was a slit in the rat hide’s hand area, and through that opening, Denton’s combat knife poked out.
With one swift swing and a stab, two mutant rats dropped dead.
“Squeak!”
Denton copied the sharp, single–note cry that the teenage rat king had made earlier.
And then something unexpected happened.
The swarm of mutant rats turned their heads toward the teenage rat king.
But they didn’t charge. They hesitated, squeaking uncertainly.
Denton’s pulse quickened. So they’re not that loyal after all, he realized. All it took was a show of strength, and the rats were already wavering.
He grinned. Once he understood that, he pushed himself off the ground and stood up.
The rat hide didn’t fit him perfectly, but its body was long enough to make up for the missing length of his own legs.
He could stand upright without much problem.
The teenage rat king froze for a moment, then squeaked again–louder, harsher.
But Denton didn’t back down. He charged straight toward him.
The rat king’s personal guards–those truly loyal mutant rats–weren’t fooled like the others. They bared their teeth and threw themselves in front of their leader, ready to fight.
Denton’s blade flashed, followed by the slashing claws attached to the rat hide. Three of the mutant guards went down in an instant.
He cut through them like a storm, unstoppable, until he stood right before the teenage rat king.
With a sharp flick of his hand, Denton tore off the hood covering the rat king’s head, revealing a pale, terrified teenage boy underneath.
His hair was long and tangled, and his eyes glowed a sickly red.

Even with the hood gone, he kept making frantic squeaking sounds, trying to command the
swarm.
Denton instantly noticed there was something in the boy’s mouth.
He punched him hard in the face. The boy gagged, and something small and silver fell from his mouth–a whistle.
It was tiny, made of silver, and Denton instantly realized it was what the boy had used to control the mutant rats.
The whistle hit the ground. The teenage rat king dove for it, but Denton was faster. He scooped it up first, leaped high into the air, and landed on a chunk of broken concrete overlooking the swarm.
Then he blew the whistle.
“Squeak!”
The sound cut through the air like a trumpet. All the mutant rats froze and lifted their heads toward him.
The teenage rat king’s face turned white as a sheet.
His name was Eddie Slater.
Before the apocalypse, he’d been a prodigy–perfect scores in math, physics, and chemistry.
He was supposed to take the SAT the following year, one of the brightest kids at his school.
His parents weren’t well–educated, but they had pinned all their hopes on him. His father had even promised to buy him the best laptop once he got into college.
Then the world ended.
Not long after the chaos began, his dad froze to death one night–right next to Eddie and his mom. There was no warning. One moment he was alive, the next his body was stiff and cold. Eddie had clung to his father’s arm until morning.
After that, his mother broke down completely.
She went from normal to irrational–paranoid, and delusional. She kept insisting there was no apocalypse at all, that someone was behind it, that they needed to rebel and “fight back” to reclaim the world.

She told Eddie that his father wasn’t dead, only kidnapped for experiments.

But Eddie had seen his father’s lifeless body. He’d helped drag it to the cremation pit, where the dead were burned alongside the other victims.
