Chapter 303 Time of His Life
Every time the truck bounced, the giant rat’s head wobbled too.

Its back legs couldn’t straighten, so it sat cross–legged on the rear seat, front paws resting on its chest–looking downright creepy.
The rat’s head had been “fixed.” Its once–twisted mouth was now shut, and the eyes had been hollowed out.
From those empty sockets, Denton’s bright eyes stared out–and somehow, he was smiling.
“Haha! Caroline, you won’t believe this!” he said, voice muffled from inside the rat hide. “This thing is warm! We’ve found something wonderful! No wonder that teenage rat king wasn’t freezing in the blizzard! It’s like a heated jacket in here. I could live inside this thing!”
Caroline just stared at him, speechless.
Sometimes Denton really is just a big kid.
They finally reached the apartment with one minute left on the three–hour deadline.
They jumped out of the vehicle and ran for the door.
Outside, the mutant rats were shrieking nonstop, their squeaks overlapping like some horrible chorus. It sounded like they were arguing–or getting impatient.
Squeeek!
Then, a high–pitched cry sliced through the noise, silencing every other sound.
Caroline turned toward it and saw the teenage rat king standing up.
The time limit was up.
In the next instant, the entire horde charged. Thousands of rats surged toward the apartment like a living wave, their teeth flashing in the dim light, ready to chew through concrete and
steel.
But before they could reach the building, a white blur leaped high into the air…
And landed right in the middle of the swarm.
The moment it appeared, chaos erupted.

The rats scattered back, forming a wide, empty circle around the white figure.
It was Denton. Wrapped head to toe in the white mutant rat hide.

The mutant rats froze. Even the teenage rat king hesitated. The air was filled with confusion.
“Squeak, squeak!” Denton called out.
Of course, he had no idea what he was saying. He was just making random noises.
Still, it worked–sort of. The rats started whispering to each other, as if wondering, “Who is this new rat king? And why does his voice sound so weird?”
The teenage rat king squeaked again, louder, trying to command them.
But none of the rats moved.
Denton crawled on the snow, peeking out through the eye holes of the hide.
From this angle, the rats‘ twitchy faces actually looked kind of funny. They huddled together, whispering nervously, like kids gossiping in class.
“Squeak–squeak–squeak!” Denton shouted again, hopping forward twice–charging one direction, then the other.
The rats shrieked and stumbled back in panic.
He even shook his huge tail, sweeping up snow everywhere.
The movement was so ridiculous that Caroline had to look away.
“What … what is he doing?” Alger asked, clutching his broken arm in disbelief.
“Uh… learning how to be a rat?” Tom guessed uncertainly.
He’d seen some weird things in his life–but never this.
Denton, meanwhile, was having the time of his life.
Through the empty eye sockets, he watched the mutant rats panic, crash into each other, and squeal. It was hilarious.
The claws on the rat’s hide were thick and sharp. When he swung an arm, one of the claws accidentally sliced through a mutant rat’s whisker, snapping it clean off.

“Squeecak!” Denton shouted excitedly, totally immersed in the act.
The rats outside grew even more confused.
