Chapter 302 Goldy
Denton tossed a grenade, and a loud boom echoed across the field.

The explosion sent the rats flying, but soon even more came pouring in like a black tide.
The rat king let out sharp, piercing squeaks, and baby rats–each no bigger than a peanut- started swarming out of the warehouse.
Caroline remembered how terrifying those little things were last time.
But now they looked even smaller–tiny pink blobs almost invisible in the snow.
Their bodies were small, but their movements were faster, stronger.
Their needle–like teeth gleamed cold under the frozen light.
Caroline gritted her teeth. She had made up her mind.
She couldn’t let those rats catch up, not when they were clearly more dangerous this time.
The only option was to kill the rat king–fast.
“Goldy, kill it,” Caroline ordered quietly.
A golden light flashed on her wrist. A thin, shimmering snake slipped out from her bracelet and slithered beneath the rat king’s thick belly fur. No one noticed.
The mutant rat king’s fur was long and dense–twice as thick as the one they’d fought before.
Once Goldy disappeared under that fur, it was impossible to see.
Sensing danger, the rat king began to thrash violently. Alger and Tom struggled to hold the
net.
“The rat king’s going crazy!” Alger shouted, his arm hanging limp and broken, his face pale from pain. He kicked and pulled with all his strength, trying to hold on.
The rat king’s claws raked across his body wildly, but not in attack—it was as if the creature was desperately trying to find something.
The swarm of mutant rats around them grew even more restless. They screeched and pushed forward, trying to reach their king.

But it was too late.
Goldy wriggled twice, then sank its fangs deep into the rat king’s soft belly.
In just a few seconds, the massive beast went still.
The little golden snake was named “Goldy” by Caroline. It was highly venomous.
Caroline saw a faint golden flash, and her wrist turned cold.

She looked down to see her bracelet glowing faintly. Two tiny blue eyes blinked from within the gold–Goldy’s way of communicating–before fading back into the metal.
“Good job, Goldy,” Caroline whispered, gently brushing her fingers over the bracelet.
It gave a soft pulse, like a tiny snake rubbing against her skin playfully.
Alger and Tom stood frozen. They had no idea what had just happened–only that the rat king was suddenly dead.
But there was no time to question it. They rushed back to the truck.
Without their king’s command, the mutant rats hesitated, then turned on each other in chaos.
Caroline knew what that meant—it was time for them to choose a new king.
The team hurried back to the vehicle, dragging the rat king’s corpse behind them.
Blood trickled from its open mouth, its eyes bulging and glassy. It was a gruesome sight.
No one except Caroline knew how it had really died. No one asked, either. They just wanted to get out of that nightmare.
They finally stopped inside an abandoned building to rest and examine the corpse.
Even after checking for a while, they couldn’t figure out what had killed it.
“Tyler,” Denton said, frowning, “maybe we hit it too hard earlier and caused some internal injury. That’s probably why it just dropped dead.”
His theory was ridiculous, but no one had a better answer.
Only Caroline sat quietly to the side, thinking–Goldy really is something else.
Next, Caroline got to witness Tyler’s skills in action.
