They reached the meeting point quickly. Most of them were using the gliders for the first time, so a few drifted slightly off target.
Even after the healing spring changed her body, Caroline still missed the building by 18 feet.
Denton and Tyler looked practiced. They glided down like they’d done it a hundred times. Each rolled and slipped through a window, folding their gliders as they entered. They moved like huge bats in the night.
Watching them, Caroline learned a little. She checked her gear and thought she’d be better next time.
By the time Denton and Tyler drove the truck out, Caroline and the others had gathered at the building entrance. Raven was already waiting by the door. They linked up and headed for the grain warehouses.
When they arrived, exactly one hour had passed. The warehouses were in ruins. Several doors were streaked with blood. Clearly, the place had seen many fights since their last visit.
Caroline crept closer to the two middle warehouses and signaled everyone to stop. She remembered the rat king had been inside one of them. Now, the big doors were shut tight. The blood on the walls had dried into crusty patches. Even the snow in front of the buildings held faint red stains. Snow hadn’t covered the crimson.
Then she spotted a pile of human bones outside one warehouse. Pale bones, with no flesh left. Hollow skulls stacked into a small hill.
As they watched warily, the bone pile moved. A skull wobbled and tumbled. A huge white rat head pushed out from the pile. It was almost as big as a grown man’s head. Its red eyes locked on the group.
Then Caroline saw it grin. It opened its mouth like a person and showed two white, hard teeth. A drop of saliva fell and froze into a little ribbon of blood–streaked ice.
Who knew how many people the rat king had eaten to grow this large?
Before Caroline and the others could fully react, the rat king charged straight at them. Its target was Caroline. She looked the smallest among them.
The rat king clearly knew how to ambush. It aimed for a weak point. Its eyes were fierce. It looked like it meant to kill.

But this time, it would fail.

Caroline raised the specially made net. They planned to capture the rat king without damaging its pelt. They had hoped to catch it alive and keep the fur intact.
Unexpectedly, the rat king ran right into their trap.
After a brutal half–hour fight, they finally forced the rat king into a reinforced net. Building B had contributed a little–the net was originally sent by them to trap mutant cockroaches. Francis had the idea to use it on the rat king.
The rat king thrashed inside the net. Other rats charged forward to rescue him. But Caroline and the others were wearing pieces of the previous rat king’s hide. The scent confused the smaller rats. Many of them hesitated and stayed back.
Bold rats still attacked. One by one, more rats joined the fight. The situation began to spiral out of control.
Tom and Alger clung to the net, keeping the rat king from breaking free.
