Chapter 300 Three Hours

As Francis spoke, he handed over a bloodstained piece of paper.

It read, All soldiers must come down and be ready to die within three hours, or this building will be wiped out.

It seemed the teenage rat king still had a bit of humanity lefthe gave them time, maybe because he didn’t want to kill every

civilian inside.

Three hours is enough,Tyler said, nodding.

Caroline did the math. If they drove at full speed, it would take nearly an hour to reach the grain warehouse.

A round trip would be almost two hours.

That left them with about one hour to ambush the rat king.

Based on last time’s experience, that should be enoughif they moved fast.

Alger, Tom, you two go with Caroline,Francis ordered.

Francis was still badly injured, so he couldn’t go himself. Alger, his personal guard, and Tom Curley, a big middleaged man built ike a tank, would accompany them instead.

Outside, the cold was brutal. Each of them carried a small heating unit inside their coatsmini charcoal furnaces that kept their body temperature stable.

This mission was no joke. In this kind of weather, if the furnaces went out, they’d freeze solid in minutes.

The heaters had been newly developed over the last few daysabout the size of a palm, but packed with fuel. They had clever vents and insulation, so they could be strapped around the waist or chest without burning the skin or restricting movement.

When they reached the lower level, they came facetoface with a horde of mutant rats.

The rats screeched in warning as soon as they spotted the humans.

The teenage rat king was crouched nearby, halfburied in ice, its head low and body stillcompletely unafraid of the soldiers.

Up close, Caroline saw that these rats were even bigger than the ones they’d fought before. Their fur looked harder, like spiky steel bristles. When they felt threatened, the fur stood on end and gleamed under the dim light.

They looked more dangerous than ever.

That also meant the rats in the grain warehouse were probably even more mutated now.

Before leaving, Alger and Tom had changed into plain clothes instead of military uniforms.

Alger carried a flamethrower, planning to clear a path through the horde if needed.

But Caroline gently stopped him. That’ll only make them mad.

Sure, the flamethrower could carve a way outbut if the teenage rat king got enraged and attacked the shelter early, it would be a

disaster.

The smartest move was to slip through without triggering a fight.

Their vehicle wasn’t parked near the shelter. It was hidden inside an abandoned building nearby. The lower entrances of the shelter had long since been flooded by acid rain and snow, leaving only the windows as exits.

If the cars had been left outside, they’d already be buried under snow.

Let’s circle from Building B,Caroline suggested.

They headed upstairs toward the bridge connecting Building A and Building B. The bridge had recently been repairedby Building B’s people, actuallyas a peace offering to show goodwill toward the army in Building A.

But just before they crossed, Tyler stopped them.

I have another way,he said. We can skip Building B entirely. That way, we don’t owe them any favors.

He pulled a few sleek gliding devices from his backpack. They looked like compact, hightech parachutes.
