328 Someone Is Here
Raven’s expression was one of clear irritation as he shot Snow a sharp, disdainful glance from the corner of his eye, silently judging the tiny whirlwind of mischief she embodied.
“Hey, Caroline,” Denton chimed in with genuine curiosity, “Raven’s a boy, right? And Snow’s a girl! Maybe in a year or so, once Snow’s fully grown, we could let them have puppies. I’d love to raise one myself.” His voice held a hopeful enthusiasm that was hard to miss.
Raven seemed to catch the drift immediately. Without hesitation, he darted away from Snow, as if to say, “No way, not happening. I’m staying single!” His swift evasion was almost comical in its clarity.
Snow, however, wasn’t ready to give up so easily. She tried to keep the playful energy alive, but just then, Tyler’s firm voice cut through the air: “Snow, sit!”
As if obeying a spell, Snow froze in place and dropped obediently to the ground. Yet, her eyes never left Raven’s tail, silently protesting, “Fine, I won’t play, but at least I can watch, right?”
Sensing the moment was right, the group gathered their things and headed downstairs. They climbed into the car, the engine roaring to life, and soon they were speeding away.
Denton’s battle cry rang out, full of determination: “Stock up! Go all out!”
Their first destination was the leather factory near the coal yard they had checked out a few days earlier. The familiar route felt heavy with anticipation.
After about an hour of travel, Caroline noticed the snowstorm had lessened considerably, though the world was still blanketed in white. The factory itself was buried beneath a thick, unyielding layer of snow.
Drawing from their recent experience clearing the coal plant, Raven took the lead confidently, while Caroline and Tyler began shoveling snow away, using the storage space they had brought along. It wasn’t long before they uncovered the factory’s door handle, a small victory amid the cold.
But as they approached, an unbearable stench assaulted their senses. It was difficult to pinpoint—something foul and sickly that made their skin crawl.
Even more unsettling was the unmistakable sign that someone was living inside the factory.
A faint, flickering light—like a flashlight—glimmered through the gloom, and a shadow flitted quickly across the room’s interior.
A raspy voice suddenly called out, “Who’s there?”
Caroline and Tyler exchanged cautious glances, their unease growing. Who could possibly be inside? The place was practically entombed in snow. How were they even breathing?
No one had noticed the subtle bumps beneath the snow-covered air vents, cleverly designed to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. The snow acted as a natural camouflage.
