Chapter 336: The Key to Unlocking the Electronic Shackles
Caroline and her group lingered a short distance away, quietly observing as the turmoil gradually began to subside. The air was thick with tension, but the immediate danger had lessened. Around the sprawling institute, clusters of researchers in white lab coats could be seen cautiously emerging from the shadows.
Most of these scientists appeared gaunt and pale, their faces etched with fear. Even though the violence had ceased, they remained hesitant, reluctant to step fully into the open. Unlike Nelson, however, none of them bore shackles on their legs.
At that moment, Nelson’s sharp eyes caught sight of Caroline and her companions. He studied them carefully, his gaze guarded and wary, before finally breaking the silence. “Are you with Harry?” His voice was rough and dry, as if he hadn’t spoken—or drunk water—in days, or perhaps his throat was injured.
Francis stepped forward confidently, his uniform crisp and authoritative. “Harry is dead. We’re with the army now. This place is under our control. You can choose to work with us—we’ll treat you fairly. Or you can leave. We won’t stand in your way.”
As Francis finished speaking, whispers rippled through the group of researchers hiding nearby. Some began to cry quietly, tears of relief and joy breaking free. It was clear that Harry’s rule had been a heavy burden on these people for a long time.
A few brave researchers stepped forward, seeking confirmation from Francis about the truth of his words. Francis gestured to a young soldier, who promptly approached and began explaining the situation in detail.
Yet Nelson remained silent, refusing to emerge from behind the twisted mutant tree where he had taken cover. His eyes stayed fixed on the group, deep in contemplation.
Caroline instantly sensed Nelson’s distrust of the army. Memories from her past life surfaced—stories she had heard about Nelson’s nature. He was known to be powerful but deeply suspicious, with a mind that operated on a different wavelength than most. His obsession with research bordered on madness.
He had earned the nickname “mad scientist,” despite being regarded as the strongest ability user. Though he was also called the most powerful healer, he showed little interest in saving lives. When he did intervene, it was either out of compulsion or personal amusement.
His passions lay solely in research: studying mutant creatures and plants, and experimenting with new drugs. Caroline understood why Nelson despised the army—their rigid discipline and seriousness clashed with his wild, unorthodox nature. Plus, Harry’s connections to the army, being from the Lowlands, only deepened Nelson’s resentment.
At 5:15 p.m., Caroline decided to take a step forward. She met Nelson’s gaze steadily and said, “Hello, I’m Caroline. I was the one who killed Harry.”
Nelson’s eyes snapped to her immediately. Caroline noticed the faint twitch at the corners of his mouth—a fleeting expression of satisfaction. “Well done,” he muttered through clenched teeth.
