Chapter 337: You Saved Me

Just as Nelson’s hope was slipping away, Caroline tossed him another key. This time, it fit perfectly.

With a swift motion, Nelson unlocked the shackle binding his ankle. He threw it far from him, watching it land with a clatter, his eyes clouded with bitterness and anger. The control Harry had exerted over him through these shackles was a deep humiliation, one Nelson clearly despised with every fiber of his being.

Handing the remaining key back to Caroline, Nelson said, “This one should unlock the shackles on Dr. Sinclair’s ankle.”

Caroline didn’t recognize the name “Dr. Sinclair,” but she guessed that once Francis identified the right person, this key would prove useful. She barely registered that the doctor shared her last name. Sinclair wasn’t an extremely common surname, but it wasn’t rare enough to draw her immediate attention.

Just as she was about to find a soldier to deliver the key to Francis, Nelson’s voice cut through the air.

“Ms. Sinclair, you saved me, eliminated my enemy, and gave me my freedom. From now on, my life is yours. If you ever need help, just say the word.”

He paused briefly, then added, “By the way, this mutant tree here is my companion. His name is Handsy. He’s a powerful ally, and in this apocalypse, having him by my side will be invaluable.”

Caroline froze momentarily. The mutant tree rustled its leaves and gave a small, almost friendly wave, as if greeting her. Nelson, with a completely blank expression, mimicked the tree’s gesture by raising his hand in the same way.

She blinked, stunned. What was going on here? Was this some kind of package deal? Had he just forced himself—and a giant mutant tree—into becoming her allies?

In truth, Caroline had already been considering befriending Nelson. After all, he was destined to become the most powerful user of healing abilities. Beyond that, he was a brilliant scientist, known for numerous groundbreaking discoveries in the post-apocalyptic world—some related to medicinal herbs, others concerning mutant biology.

Nelson was a remarkably well-rounded individual. Aside from his eccentric way of thinking, he seemed to have no glaring weaknesses.

Caroline found his sudden loyalty almost surreal. How could he be so ready to follow her already—and bring along such a massive mutant tree? But then a practical concern struck her: where on earth was she supposed to keep a tree this huge? She couldn’t just plant him by the roadside.
