“It’s okay. You don’t need to feel awkward about that,” Caroline reassured gently, brushing off any hint of discomfort.

She decided not to linger on the subject and quickly moved on. “Also, I have a fully equipped lab downstairs where you can conduct all sorts of experiments. The army has agreed to provide me with some mutant animat corpses for my research. I’m really hoping we can collaborate on this…”

Suddenly, Nelson’s voice cut through the air sharply. “Ms. Sinclair!”

Caroline’s brow furrowed in confusion, unsettled by the intense, almost menacing expression on Nelson’s face. What’s going on with him now? Did I say something wrong?

She was well aware that Nelson could be difficult and unpredictable, often thinking in ways others didn’t. Yet, reflecting on their conversation, she was fairly certain she hadn’t crossed any lines.

“Why are we just standing here? There’s no point wasting time. I’m eager to see your lab,” Nelson said with a serious tone, stepping forward as if urging her to move.

That sudden outburst startled Caroline; the way he called her name had genuinely shocked her. So that’s what he meant—he was just impatient to get going!

With Nelson’s urgency pushing her forward, Caroline only had a brief moment to tell Francis she needed to leave ahead. She handed him the other key, explaining it would be necessary to unlock something.

Francis immediately dispatched a soldier to handle the task without hesitation.

His excitement was palpable—he could barely contain himself. “Caroline, you have no idea how many priceless items are stored in this lab! Once I finish organizing everything and report back to Nathaniel, he’s going to be ecstatic! I even brought one of the army’s researchers here, and he said some of the projects in this lab perfectly complement the army’s current work. We’re on the verge of major breakthroughs. Caroline, you really are my lucky star!”

Noticing Francis getting carried away, Caroline quickly cut him off, reminding him she had to leave.

Francis hurried off to arrange a vehicle.

When Caroline mentioned they also needed to transport a tree over sixteen feet tall, Francis nearly dropped his jaw. “Wait, that tree can understand human speech? It’s intelligent and can even say ‘hi’?”

He exaggerated the last word, mimicking a waving gesture, which made Caroline laugh softly.

“We’ll discuss that later. For now, just get the car ready,” she urged.

Without missing a beat, Francis instructed a soldier not to waste time with a jeep or SUV, but to bring the largest truck available.
