Chapter 339: Handsy Can Climb
Slowly but surely, Nelson began to play music for Handsy, filling the room with gentle melodies, and he entertained him with lighthearted jokes. It was clear that Handsy enjoyed Nelson’s company immensely, responding with a kind of quiet affection that warmed Nelson’s heart.

However, Harry was far from pleased with Nelson’s gentle approach. He believed Nelson was far too soft and insisted that harsher, more brutal experiments be conducted on Handsy. When Nelson refused to comply, Harry didn’t hesitate to make his displeasure known. He subjected Nelson to relentless pressure and torment, aiming to break his spirit and force him to obey.
Despite the torment, Nelson stood firm in his convictions. He refused to cause real harm to Handsy or any living creature. Yet, under Harry’s increasing demands, Nelson found himself cornered. He had no option but to carry out more experiments—at least on the surface. He cleverly masked the true nature of his work, pretending to perform cruel procedures while secretly protecting Handsy.
As time passed, Nelson devised a new experimental approach—one that appeared harsh but was actually gentle and harmless. He maintained an ongoing conversation with Handsy throughout, treating him with kindness and respect.
One stormy night, as thunder roared outside and lightning flashed across the sky, a sudden malfunction struck the equipment connected to Handsy’s trunk. A jolt of electricity scorched Handsy, causing most of his leaves to wither and fall away. Nelson was devastated, fearing the worst—that Handsy might not survive the incident.
He spent the entire night cradling Handsy, refusing to let go, his heart heavy with worry. But come morning, Nelson was astonished to discover that Handsy had not only survived but had undergone an incredible transformation. His roots had evolved, gaining the ability to break free from the soil and grip the ground like powerful claws, enabling him to move around. Even more astonishing, Handsy began to understand Nelson’s speech.
Over time, Nelson sensed that Handsy was developing thoughts and emotions that resembled those of a human. Caroline, upon hearing this extraordinary tale, was equally amazed. It truly was a scientific miracle.
Soon after, the truck arrived at the apartment building. When Handsy, towering over sixteen feet tall, stepped down from the vehicle carrying his own belongings and patiently waited by the curb for the truck to park, the onlookers were stunned into silence. Some even whispered fears, mistaking him for a monstrous creature.
The army quickly dispatched personnel to calm the crowd and explain the situation. Meanwhile, Caroline wracked her brain, trying to figure out where Handsy could possibly stay.
“Handsy? He should stay with me,” Nelson insisted. “He may look enormous, but deep down, he’s just a kid. He gets scared at night.”
Caroline was speechless. Handsy was a massive tree—there was no way she could imagine fitting him into the shelter, no matter how much Nelson insisted otherwise.
“Mr. Valdez, I’m afraid this building just isn’t equipped to accommodate someone like Handsy,” Caroline said carefully.
