Chapter 341: What If That Was Poison?
At last, Caroline voiced the nagging worry that had been swirling in her mind. “What if that was poison? You just ate it without even stopping to think?” Her voice was tinged with genuine concern.
Nelson looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes, as if surprised by the question. “Poison doesn’t smell like that,” he said calmly. “I’m not stupid.”
Caroline let the matter drop, though the unease lingered beneath the surface.
She was preparing to head up to the 66th floor, intending to call for Tyler and Denton. She had brought someone back with her and wanted to introduce them properly. But before she could make a move, Nelson plunged straight into his experiments, completely absorbed. Caroline never got the chance to present her guest.
As if that wasn’t enough, just as Caroline was considering leaving, a group of soldiers began hauling equipment up the stairs. The atmosphere shifted with the clatter of heavy gear and the murmur of orders.
Nelson, however, remained utterly oblivious to the commotion around him. He was lost in his own world, focused only on his work.
Besides his brief exchanges with Caroline, he ignored everyone else completely.
The situation grew awkward.
The soldiers, having brought their equipment upstairs, now looked to Caroline for instructions on where to place everything.
She had to consult Nelson.
Nelson relayed the message back to Caroline, who then directed the soldiers accordingly.
What Caroline didn’t realize was that once Nelson dived into his experiments, he essentially retreated into his own private realm.
In the past, he used to shut everyone out entirely, as though sealing himself off from the outside world.
Eventually, he realized that approach wasn’t sustainable — if he completely ignored the world, he’d miss meals, neglect sleep, and risk burning himself out.
So he created a small “window,” a crack in his fortress, reserved for one person he trusted implicitly.
If that person told him to eat or rest, he would actually listen.
In essence, when Nelson was fully immersed in his work, only a trusted individual could break through his mental barrier.
At this moment, in this strange new environment, that person was Caroline.
Caroline didn’t mind the responsibility. After all, she was the one who had brought him here, so she felt it was her duty to watch over him.
Meanwhile, the soldiers carrying the gear upstairs found the whole dynamic rather entertaining. As they made their way back down, they whispered among themselves.
“Why does that guy Caroline brought only talk to her?” the soldier with the round face asked the lanky one beside him.
