Chapter 344 The First Human Mutant

What the heck is this ugly thing, Caroline?

Denton lifted his foot, ready to give Handsy a kick.

Before he could touch it, Handsy snapped one of his leafy arms and smacked him square in the leg. Denton went tumbling to the floor facefirst.

It wasn’t Denton’s fault. Who would expect a tree to suddenly move? Or to understand when someone insulted him and strike back?

Yesterday, when Nelson had come by, Denton had been napping and missed the entire scene of Handsy climbing the stairs.

Later, Tyler had been in a foul mood and never mentioned Nelson or Handsy to him.

So, Denton became the very last person in the entire building to learn about the walking, thinking, mutant tree.

Gosh! Caroline, help! The ugly tree’s gone wild!he yelled, though he was only pretending. By now, he knew Handsy was a mutant tree and was just wrestling with him for fun.

Caroline ignored him. She stood by the window, holding her binoculars, staring outside.

She had picked up the deep rumbling sounds in the air.

It was the sound of buildings collapsing.

A violent storm swept through, churning the floodwaters into waves that crashed against what was left of the city.

Houses, once proud symbols of human civilization, tossed helplessly in the storm.

Strong waves pounded the buildings again and again until many simply crumbled apart.

Those already weakened by acid rain and unstable foundations couldn’t hold any longer.

Now, under the wild shifts in temperature, they finally gave way.

The storm and flood raged for two full hours.

When the water finally began to calm, Caroline looked out and saw what was left. Only the twin towersBuilding A and Building B -still stood tall. Most of the others had vanished beneath the water or collapsed entirely.

The few that remained shared one thing in common: they were new.

Her apartment, for instance, was recently built; that was exactly why Caroline had chosen it as her shelter after the apocalypse began.

Some buildings might still be hiding below the flood’s surface.

Whether they’d survive once the water retreated, she had no idea.

In those two hours, Caroline understood something again, something she’d known deep down but kept forgetting: Humans were powerless before nature.

When the storm finally stopped, she let out a slow breath of relief.

But she knew this wasn’t the end.

It was only the start of something worse.

Because in the next three days, the temperature would keep rising.

The floodwaters beneath their feet would begin to fall fast.

The army had already started organizing people to store what little clean water was left.

A shocking message spread through the armymutants had appeared.

The first one showed up on the front line.

And it wasn’t just anyone; it was Kay, who had gone to the front lines for training and gained some war experience.

The army went into an uproar. So did Building B.

For the army, it meant something terrifying: if humans could mutate, was this the beginning of another disaster?

For the scientists in Building B, it was pure frustration. They had spent months experimenting, trying to be the first to create a mutant so they could negotiate with the army. Yet the army had beaten them to it.

Caroline knew nothing about any of this.

The night before, her body had started burning up. She felt dizzy and weak, barely able to stay awake.

And now, she had passed out.

She was mutating too.

Raven and Jet panicked when they saw her collapse.

They struggled to lift Caroline onto her bed, but no matter how hard they shouted or nudged her, she wouldn’t wake up.

Finally, the two rushed out of the room.

Jet squawked at the top of his lungs, Bad! Really bad! My human’s dying!
