363 Nelson in Frenzy Mode
Dwayne refused to accept death here—certainly not in this place, under these circumstances. The thought of giving up never crossed his mind. So, when he overheard a woman calling out for someone named Nelson, a plan began to form in his mind. If he could find Nelson, maybe, just maybe, there was a chance to survive.
By the time he reached the 64th floor, Dwayne wasn’t alone in his determination. Two other men appeared to share the same goal. They lingered near the stairwell entrance, hesitating, as if weighing their options carefully. Dwayne gritted his teeth, frustration bubbling over, and with a sudden burst of fire, he blasted the metal door wide open. “We don’t have any other choice, do we?” he said, voice low but firm.
That bold move seemed to ignite something in the others. Exchanging a quick glance, the two men charged forward, pushing upward together. But what awaited them was unexpected—a large black dog stood firmly in their path.
One of the men raised his hand, ready to strike, but Dwayne quickly intervened, stopping him. Forcing a calm smile, he addressed the dog directly. “Hey, you’re Raven, right? Caroline sent us. We’re here to take over and keep Nelson safe.”
Raven’s piercing ice-blue eyes locked on Dwayne, unblinking and skeptical. He didn’t buy a single word. Sweat trickled down Dwayne’s forehead as he silently acknowledged just how dangerous this dog was. He recalled a conversation he’d once overheard—Caroline speaking to her pets, revealing insights about them. Taking a chance, Dwayne pressed on.
“I know about your friend Jet. Caroline said you should go upstairs and get him to come down. You’ve probably heard someone downstairs wants to hurt Nelson. He’s a top priority now. She’s worried you can’t protect him alone, so she told you to bring Jet.”
Still, Raven remained unmoving, standing like a statue with furrowed brows, seemingly weighing the truth of Dwayne’s words.
Dwayne tried again, urgency creeping into his voice. “Caroline said Jet only trusts you. If we go up, Jet won’t believe us. That’s why she sent you. I swear, we’re telling the truth.”
But Raven did not budge. Without Caroline’s direct command, the dog would not lift a paw.
Suddenly, one of the men lost patience. He extended his hand and sent a vine whipping toward Raven. At that exact moment, a steelworm burst from the hallway. Raven turned sharply to confront the bug, missing the vine flying toward him.
Wham!
The vine wrapped tightly around Raven’s hind leg, yanking him down to the floor.
“Haha! Got him!” the man who’d attacked laughed triumphantly. “Go grab Nelson now!”
Dwayne gave him a quick thumbs-up and sprinted toward the laboratory.
But Raven was far from defeated. Anger flared within him as he shrank his body, slipping free from the vine’s grasp. He darted toward his attacker with fierce determination.
Meanwhile, Dwayne had already burst into the lab.
Inside, Nelson stood over his workbench, eyes sparkling with excitement. In his hand, he held a vial filled with a bright yellow liquid, his voice ringing out in triumph. “Haha! I did it! These steelworms are terrified of this stuff! You’re finished, you nasty bugs!”
