362 Give Me Nelson!
Caroline’s jaw tightened as she fixed a fierce glare on Lisa. In her palm, a shard of ice materialized—gleaming, razor-sharp, and cold as death itself.
“Shut the hell up!” she barked, hurling the icy blade directly at her.
But Lisa’s voice had already carried to the frightened people hiding on the upper floors. Panic rippled through the building like wildfire.
“Hand him over!” came the desperate cries from above. “Give us Nelson before it’s too late—we’re all going to die otherwise!”
Lisa nimbly dodged Caroline’s attack, her voice ringing out clear and urgent, cutting through the damp, oppressive air of the flooded building. “Listen carefully! I’m Lisa Middleton from Obsidian Fang. We know how to handle mutant steelworms! Not just them—we can stop every insect disaster out there! Turn Nelson Valdez over to us. No one has to die today!”
Caroline’s anger flared hotter, burning away any hesitation. She unleashed a flurry of attacks, each one more furious than the last, determined to silence Lisa once and for all.
Yet Lisa was protected by a living shield—thousands of insects leaping out of the water, forming a writhing, impenetrable wall that swallowed every strike.
Caroline tried again, aiming the icy blade toward Lisa’s throat, but the insects moved with uncanny precision, like disciplined soldiers guarding their queen.
This was Lisa’s terrifying power—the ability to command the swarm. Caroline hadn’t expected her to have such control so soon after awakening.
Someone in Building B must have discovered a way to help their people master their abilities rapidly.
“Caroline,” Lisa’s voice softened, laced with calm persuasion, “stop this fighting. Talk to Professor Valdez. It’s for everyone’s good.”
Caroline forced herself to steady her breath, gulping down a bottle of spring water. She focused, feeling raw energy crackling in her palms despite the icy chill. With a fierce cry, she swung her hand forward.
In an instant, the floor beneath her froze solid, the ice spreading downward through the building, reaching all the way to the water below. The frozen sheet extended more than thirty feet, locking everything in place.
Hundreds of steelworms were caught mid-motion, trapped in thick layers of ice. Even the swarm beneath Lisa’s feet snapped silent and solid.
Lisa realized what was happening a moment too late. She quickly summoned another wave of insects that lifted her high into the air—the only thing keeping her from becoming an ice statue.
Her heart pounded, her eyes wide with fear as she stared at Caroline. What kind of monster was this? Lisa had always believed her ability was unmatched, but Caroline’s power was something else entirely.
Caroline wasn’t finished yet.
She clenched her fist tightly.
The frozen ground hissed as it burst into steam, the ice melting rapidly into hot vapor.
The bugs that had tried to break through the ice were instantly scorched by the rising steam.
Countless insects perished in that moment, all because of Caroline’s single, devastating move.
One after another, they fell from the walls, splattering like crimson rain.
