The little pony rolled his eyes.

Caroline let out a soft laugh. She had a feeling the pony probably did not like the name, but it did not matter; he likely could not understand the words anyway, so Denton could keep it.

Caroline watched Shorty and Denton together and could not help but think that they actually made a cute pair.

Of course, if Caroline had a little donkey, it might make a perfect match for Denton.

“Alright, but he’s running a bit slow now and is too fat. It’d be great if he could mutate. Tonight, I’ll give you some acid rain; you let him soak,” Caroline said.

She never imagined that the acid rain she had stockpiled at the start of the apocalypse would be used for a pony for the first time.

Denton was not the type to take advantage of others. He knew Shorty might not be considered important in Caroline’s space, but to him, he was his prized steed!

He also found Shorty’s temperament excellent. He was very perceptive and friendly. Denton had guessed right: this little pony had been in a small zoo before the apocalypse, used to being petted and fed by hundreds of people every day, so he was very human–friendly. Denton had decided then and there that Shorty would be his ideal mount.

Having Caroline’s little pony as such a prized steed, and with acid rain to mutate him, Denton felt like he had struck gold.

He touched his chin, pondering how he could possibly repay Caroline.

She was not sure how far Nelson had gotten with his research on it.

Unbeknownst to them, downstairs in the shelter, Commander Ball was being carried into Francis’s office.

Seeing the old commander, Francis trembled. “What… what happened? A few days ago, they said you were fine. How come you suddenly can’t get out of bed?”

His voice rose as he yelled at the commander’s attendants.

Even though it wasn’t anyone else’s fault, Francis could not control his emotions.

He had never seen Nathaniel so weak. Even when Nathaniel was injured before, his complexion had never looked this bad.

“Francis Sutton, why are you yelling? Cough! Cough! Cough!” Nathaniel opened his eyes weakly. Though slightly cloudy, his gaze was still sharp.

“Commander Ball…” Francis choked up as he spoke.

From what the soldiers with the commander had said, after the last injury healed, his body had become fragile. But with endless responsibilities and the cold earlier causing lingering coughs, his condition worsened.

Eventually, it developed into pneumonia.

He should’ve been resting for pneumonia, but Nathaniel never took the time to recover.

Over time, chronic exhaustion had taken its toll.

When the weather warmed up, Nathaniel’s abilities awakened, but they were fairly useless.

Instead of improving his health, the fever and abilities made him worse.

His strength was already fading.
