**TITLE: Doomsday Rebirth 431**
**Chapter 431: People Who Were in It Together**
Tears streamed down the faces of many soldiers loyal to Nathaniel. The atmosphere was thick with sorrow, and their thoughts were consumed by a haunting phrase that echoed in their minds: “the final flicker of life.”
Their esteemed commander, a man of unwavering integrity who had never taken anything from the people even before the world fell apart, had always dedicated himself tirelessly to the country he loved. Even now, well past the age of seventy, he continued to stand valiantly on the front lines, a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.
In the aftermath of the apocalypse, Nathaniel had taken it upon himself to oversee a multitude of shelters, tirelessly enforcing justice and crafting survival strategies. He had guided the officials and citizens of Hornvale through one catastrophe after another, embodying resilience in the face of despair.
But now, they could only watch as he faded, a shadow of his former self, and they felt utterly powerless to intervene.
After finishing a modest meal of steamed eggs, Nathaniel, with a determination that belied his frail condition, insisted on visiting Francis himself.
Those familiar with their bond understood that, while their relationship was rooted in a hierarchy, it transcended mere rank; it was more akin to that of a father and son. This deep connection intensified the fear that gripped everyone present, as they braced themselves for the worst possible outcome.
Some soldiers proposed that they summon Francis to Nathaniel, but the old commander was resolute.
“I refuse to die in this hut. I want to be among my people—in the shelter,” he declared with a firmness that surprised even himself.
With heavy hearts, Nathaniel’s soldiers assisted him to the shelter. When Nathaniel finally laid eyes on Francis, he couldn’t help but ask him to showcase his awakened powers. A flicker of pride danced in his clouded eyes as he remarked, “Not bad, not bad. You’re truly my protégé.”
With a smile that seemed to momentarily light up his waning spirit, Nathaniel then succumbed to unconsciousness.
In an instant, chaos erupted within Francis’s office.
The iron-willed leader, known for his stoic demeanor, could no longer contain his emotions. Tears streamed down his face as he shouted with an intensity that reverberated through the room, “Quick! Fetch Caroline and Nelson! Call the doctors! Bring every healing-type ability user to the shelter immediately!
“Whoever can save Nathaniel, my life will forever belong to them!”
Caroline, who had just begun to settle into a restless sleep, was jolted awake by the urgency in Francis’s voice.
The entire sixty-sixth floor had been resting, and Caroline, along with others, had turned off the walkie-talkie on the sixty-fourth floor to avoid disturbances. Yet, the soldiers below had been shouting into it for what felt like an eternity with no response.
Time was of the essence. They quickly chose a soldier with a unique ability—one who could adhere to walls—and sent him scaling the outside of the building from the sixty-fourth-floor corridor. He deftly climbed to the sixty-sixth floor and rapped on Caroline’s bedroom window.
Upon hearing the noise, Caroline’s instincts kicked in, and she tensed, instinctively reaching for her knife.
