Tyler saw the wound on Ryan’s neck and knew he didn’t have much time left. All he could do was sigh.
“I’m going now,” Ryan whispered weakly. “Finally… I can go… Be careful… of Building B. Someone there… wants to hurt you. His name… Son… Dy…”
He didn’t finish his sentence before his eyes slowly closed.
At the same time, his hand lifted weakly and pressed something into Tyler’s palm.
The moment the object touched Tyler’s hand, Ryan’s body went limp, all strength leaving him.
He was gone.
Tyler looked at Ryan, who seemed to have fallen into a peaceful sleep, and reached out to pull him into his arms, holding him tightly as if saying a final goodbye.
Caroline walked over and crouched beside him, her tone filled with quiet regret. “I didn’t expect him to take his life the moment he came to his senses. I thought he would wait for you.”
Tyler shook his head. “When he attacked you the first time, I already knew I’d have to kill him. Asking Nelson to find a cure was just me trying to delay the truth. When he lost control again and took Nelson, I was ready to end it. He used to be my teammate, but now… I understand. You all matter more.”
He exhaled heavily. “I’ll bury him with Denton later. You go
ahead.”
Caroline nodded. In her previous life during the apocalypse, she’d never had true friends–or lost any. She couldn’t fully grasp what Tyler felt right now.
Mounting Raven, she said softly, “I’ll go get Denton.”
Tyler gave a small nod.
Just as she was about to leave, he called out, “You look… beautiful.”
Caroline blinked, confused at first, until she realized he meant the enormous flower still blooming on her head.
“Not that,” Tyler said quickly. “You, standing in the middle of the flowers.”
Perhaps sensing what Caroline was thinking, Tyler added softly.

She didn’t know what to say, so she just smiled faintly.

“In this world,” Tyler murmured, looking around, “I’ve seen enough death. But beauty like this -never. Dying in a field of flowers is the best ending Ryan could have hoped for.”
He stood in the sea of blossoms, holding Ryan’s body, staring at Caroline and the endless colors around them. His voice carried a strange mix of emotion.
It was clear that, in this moment, Tyler had allowed himself a rare touch of sentiment.
Caroline nodded silently, then left on Raven. She wanted to give Tyler and Denton time to say goodbye to their old friend.
They had once been a team, after all.
As for her, she planned to check on Nelson first, rest a bit, and then head to the refuge.
She needed to find Nathaniel and copy his ability again.
If she waited too long, Nathaniel might leave—and it wasn’t easy to track down the commander of Hornvale’s military base.
She also needed to visit Building B and meet Crow to copy his ability again. After using it earlier, her remaining charges were running low.
When Denton heard that Ryan had died, he stayed silent for a moment before saying, “To choose when and how to die… that’s luck in its own way.”
He was right. Most people in this world didn’t even get to see death coming. They just disappeared, swallowed up by disaster.
To choose your own time and place to die-
That really was a kind of fortune.
Even Caroline couldn’t say for sure that she wouldn’t die tomorrow.
In this apocalypse, every step forward was through thorns.
“It’s alright, Caroline,” Denton told her. “We’ve lost teammates before, even before the world ended. We know the living matter more than the dead. We won’t drown in grief. For Ryan, this was a good ending. He can finally be with the woman he loved. Don’t worry about us.”
After Denton left, Caroline went to check on Nelson. He was lying in bed, completely healed, not a mark left on his body.
