Caroline was speechless. Nelson had always bragged about his sharp nose, claiming he could even smell poison–and now she had to admit, he was right.

He devoured both caramel puddings in seconds, smacked his lips twice, and sighed with pure satisfaction, savoring the taste that still lingered in his mouth.

Then he looked up at Caroline, eyes bright with excitement. “Caroline, when I got captured, I thought I was done for! That guy was crazy strong. I didn’t even have time to pull out my scalpel before I got knocked out. And then–boom–I wake up in bed, and there’s caramel pudding! It feels like I just took a nap!”

Caroline stared at him.

From the way he sounded, you’d think he’d won something instead of getting kidnapped.

Caramel pudding wasn’t even rare for her—she had more than a thousand in her space storage. She could make them herself, too. The ingredients were simple and easy to keep stocked.

Seeing how much Nelson liked them, she quietly took out three more and placed them on his table.

“Caroline, you’re the best!”

lit up. He picked one up immediately and dug in, head down and happy.

In that moment, he radiated pure contentment. Just watching him eat made others feel a little happier too.

Honestly, if Nelson ever gave up science, he’d make a perfect food vlogger–if only it weren’t for those ridiculous braids on his head.

Ever since Nelson and Denton became friends, they’d been inseparable.

Sometimes Denton helped him with lab work, handing him scalpels or holding equipment. Other times, when Nelson was focused, Denton amused himself by playing with his hair- three braids, then four, then tying them back into one again.

Nelson’s long hair had practically become Denton’s new hobby.

Denton would even point to it proudly and say, “See? Told you I have a gift for hairstyling!”

About an hour later, Tyler and Denton returned.

Neither looked especially sad. Denton immediately praised Caroline’s Blooming Fields ability, saying it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

Tyler quietly picked a handful of flowers, found a bottle, and placed them in the living room.

Once everything settled, Tyler came to knock on Caroline’s door.

He told her what Ryan had said before dying.

Caroline frowned. “Building B? Son? Dy… Dyson?”

Tyler nodded. “That’s what I think too.”

Caroline rubbed her chin, thinking hard. “But Dyson… he’s always working in the shadows. The things he does never seem big enough to pose a real threat. We’ve never had a direct conflict with him.

“And Crow shouldn’t be targeting us again. So is Dyson defying Crow’s orders?” She couldn’t quite figure it out.

But it didn’t matter. Her resolve was simple–nothing and no one would stand in her way.

“I’m heading back to the refuge today,” she said. “I also need to copy Crow’s ability again while I’m at Building B. I’ll check on Dyson while I’m there–and see if there’s any other threat inside the place.”

Tyler nodded. “I’m coming with you.”

She didn’t refuse. That was fine with her.

They had been running nonstop all night and were completely drained, so everyone went to

rest.

When they woke again, it was already past two in the afternoon–the hottest part of the day.

Outside, the temperature had climbed past 122°F. Standing under the sun for even a few minutes could cause heatstroke.
