As for the soulmate who could turn the pendant red, he had never appeared.
Years passed, and Metis forgot all about it. She accepted this as her life–a life devoted entirely to the study of Revarian medicine. She existed to serve. Then, a fire erupted, and she came perilously close to death.
As the flames threatened to consume her, Metis realized she harbored one regret–she wished she had a protege to pass her knowledge to.
At that moment, a towering figure crashed through the walls. Light seemed to shine upon him, bright and unstoppable.
A deep, commanding voice filled her ears. “Don’t be afraid. I’m getting you out!”
Before she could react, Sebastian scooped her into his arms. In that instant, the flames seemed powerless to touch her.
In a flash, they were outside. She was safe.
Breathing in the fresh air and watching the inferno from a distance, Metis felt as if she were still dreaming. The man set her down gently. She opened her mouth to thank him, but he was already gone, sprinting back into the fire to halt its spread.
Metis stared at his retreating figure. Her heart raced, and a torrent of emotions surged through her.
“Have I fallen in love, just as my mentor said? But this… This feels reckless! I’ve fallen for a man I just met? I don’t even know his name,” she whispered.
Her cheeks burned. Was it the residual heat from the fire, or was she blushing?
“No way. I’ll never meet my soulmate. And even if I did, I might not feel anything!” she told herself, shaking her head.
Then her pendant suddenly grew warm. Curious, she drew it out and, to her astonishment, saw it had turned a deep, vivid red. It felt as though the gods themselves had revealed it to her.
Her heart leapt, and she gasped. “He’s the one?!”
She watched the fire, worried when Sebastian did not appear. She knew she could not rush back inside. All she could do was pace, anxious and restless, seeking any clue about her “soulmate.”
Eventually, she learned his name–Sebastian Grimwald. He was a handsome, skilled young man. She also discovered that he was recently married and living a happy life with his family.
Metis felt a bitter sting. She stared at the pendant with a wry smile.
Was this a cruel joke by the gods–revealing her soulmate only to have him already taken?
