Chapter 161
I sneered. Evanna knew better than to continue the conversation and ordered the driver to start driving.
It was around the time most people were getting off work. Traffic congestion turned a 20–minute journey into nearly an hour. By the time we arrived, it was already late.
Evanna had not gotten out of her car. Instead, she sighed from her seat. “It’s too late, isn’t it? The clinic’s closed for the day. Dr. Fey isn’t going to treat anyone after hours. Maybe we should come back tomorrow…”
I remembered what Metis had told me she would always have time for my visit.
Still, should I put that to the test? She should be resting by now.
“Let me call her and see, Evanna,” I suggested.
I got out of the car and tapped her number into the pad. I studied her clinic while waiting for her to pick up.
It was the exact spot where the fire had broken out five years ago. I could still make out the burnt marks and scorched parts of
the building.
Another thing struck me: how ordinary her clinic looked. There was nothing gilded or eye–catching about the shopfront. By
appearances alone, no one could have guessed that one of the city’s most ingenious doctors practiced here.
I didn’t even have time to think of more observations before the call was answered almost instantly. “Hello? Sebastian?”
“That’s right. It’s me. You wanted me to visit and get a check–up, right? So here I am. I even brought Mr. Goldman’s mother for a check–up. We’re right outside your clinic now, but the door appears closed. The clinic only opens tomorrow morning, right? So
are you inside? If not, we’ll come back tomorrow.”
I was trying to give Metis a way to back out. She could simply say she wasn’t home, and we would leave immediately.
She did not respond. Then the door before me cracked open, and I could hear her real voice. The one on the phone cried out, ”
I’m here! Yes!”
She had gone straight to greet me. It seemed she wasn’t lying about always having time for me.
“Thank you for honoring my request, Dr. Fey. You’re truly an upstanding doctor!” I praised.
Suddenly, her mood changed. Instead of showing any enthusiasm, Metis returned to her usual cool exterior. She nodded regally.
“Welcome in.”
She turned away and left without looking at me even once. I was honestly stunned by the sudden change. Seconds ago, she had
looked so excited to see me!
Sebastian had no idea how wildly Metis‘ heart was racing. She had only just given him her phone number and address!
Who would have thought he would show up so soon? Could this mean he was actually fond of her?
But he had brought someone else with him. The woman he had been protecting earlier that afternoon was not with him. Metis had no chance to ask for clarification either.
Was Sebastian looking for some mingling at all? Metis had no way of telling right now. This was why she had to mask herself
