pter 22

Come on, sweetheart, don’t talk so much. You’re drunk. Just come with us. You’ll feel better. The creeps crowding around Hera had dropped the act. They ignored her warning completely.

Just as they prepared to grab her, a group of tall, stonefaced men in black suits appeared out of nowhere.

Each sleazebag took a clean slap to the face before they could react. In seconds, the entire group stood frozen, locked in place by a team of imposing bodyguards,

Hey! What the hell, man? She’s my girlfriend! You can’t just The one holding Hera the tightest spun around, ready to start a fightuntil he saw who stood behind him.

The towering men didn’t flinch. Their sharp suits, cold eyes, and intimidating presence drained every ounce of bravado from the guy.

YYeah! We’re just friends, alright? You can’t grab people like that! I’ve got friends at the precinct! You better back off before I call the cops!

The others tried to puff themselves up too, but their voices trembled. Deep down, they knew they were out of their depth.

Still, what were these men doing here? Were they after Hera too?

Before they could figure anything out, Morgan stormed out of the bar. Without a word, he walked straight up and slapped each of them across the face.

You idiots!he snapped. Do you even know who she is? That’s Hera Bishop, the CEO of Edge Inc. And you thought you could put your hands on her? You’ve got three seconds to get the hell out of here.

The name hit them like a blast.

WWait, she’s the CEO of Edge Inc.?!

II didn’t know! I swear I didn’t! I’m sorry! So sorry!

The woman they had tried to manhandle had turned into a live grenade, and they bolted without another word.

Ms. Bishop, I’m so sorry we were late. Are you alright?Morgan asked, stepping forward to steady her.

Hera stood alone, swaying slightly, her expression unreadable.

I’m fine, she murmured. Tell the others to go home. Sebastian’s not coming tonight.

Understood. Let me get the car.Morgan gave a respectful nod and signaled the bodyguards. They moved as one, melting back into the night.

He led Hera to the black luxury car waiting nearby, opened the door for her, and held a hand above the frame so she wouldn’t bump her head.

Once she was seated, he closed the door carefully and got behind the wheel. Ms. Bishop, where to?

Nowhere just yet,she said softly. Give me a minute.

Yes, ma’am.

Silence settled over the car. A long while passed before Hera finally spoke, her voice low and tight with hurt. Morgantell me. Why wouldn’t Sebastian come tonight? He used to show up every time I called.

Maybe it has something to do with Mr. Castle?Morgan answered cautiously.

I know he hates Edmund. But I told him he wouldn’t be here. Just me. Still, he didn’t come. Her voice wavered. Doesn’t he

care that I could’ve left with some random guy? Does he not love me anymore?

Morgan’s hands tightened around the steering wheel. His face showed hesitation. I’m sorry, Ms. Bishop. I don’t know how to answer that.

The backseat went quiet.

He glanced in the rearview mirror, unsure if she had fallen asleep. After a moment, he asked gently, Should I take you home?

No,Hera said at last. Take me to the office.
